Propane tank-top heater knob

Anyone know how to get this booger to turn? Been fiddling with it and can't figure it out... Does the propane have to be on 1st, maybe?

looks like a bit corroded maybe from getting wet?
sometimes they have a push to turn feature, I assume you've tried that. might be stuck from corrosion?
what is it for?

Usually push to turn but in this case there is a button in the middle. Never seen that before. What happens if you push it?

I've seen similar where you pull up on the black knob and then turn - fairly stout spring - so easier when attached to a full tank.

I pushed it, twisted it, bopped it, pushed the button while twisting (which feels like it might be stuck in the depressed position) and nothing. I've owned it since it was new and worked the last time I had used it, though that was a few years ago. It was sitting in a breezeway for a while but never really got wet. Maybe I'll give a few taps with a hammer

I am having the same situation with mine but it had been stored in a metal shed for 10+ years - maybe internal corrosion??

I have to use channel locks to open it to the desired setting but can turn it off by hand.

Not sure if spraying it with WD-40 would work or be safe so I have not tried that

Take it off and hose it with PB Blaster or Kroil. let it soak for a day or two. That should loosen it up. Blow it out with air before putting it back on and trying it.

In the 2020 Mr Heater manual, they say nothing about lifting or pushing down, just turn. Have no idea how far back I can look, or who exactly made yours, yet.
