Propane torch kit

Im in the market for a propane torch kit. I need to torch down some modified bitumen roof which requires a torch down application.

I can also use it to kill weeds popping up through the concrete in the back yard and melt ice in the winter.

I see a few on HD's website. Lincoln, MagTorch. All seem to blow 500,000 BTU and connect to LP Gas tanks.

None seem to have a pilot, so you have to us a striker.

Anyone have any experience with Propane torch kits? Recommendations?

I have a Red Dragon touch...made in USA, mine does'nt have a pilot but I think they have a model with one. Works great on weeds. Around $50

I bought the HF one, it's in the midst of a recall but I had no issues with it the couple times I used it. I used it for burning weeds with our grill propane tank and it worked just fine, I wound up picking up a torch striker so I could stop using a piece of paper set on fire

Definitely following this- was just looking to buy one with a pilot, but will wait for the GJ consensus.

Mine is prob 20yrs old. Its a bit short and i spend alot of time bending over. Thats my only gripe with it.

When I did my roof, the torch has something that stands on it's back when I needs it to lay down and help roll down the modbit... I don't remember the brand but it is something like this.. but regardless which brand you choose, the differences between the roofer torch I found different is the stand... unless OP have 3 people helping... Also a fire extinguisher handy.... it could get hairy. There are cold process modbit, same price except the glue is extra ....


when I did my roof a lot of moons ago... I did the torch down... later when I re-do it again, it's cold process morbid..I use my propane small hand torch to lit it... hate that striker thing. The Lincoln one might be for weed burning...if you do decide to get that one.... make sure it has a stand or have a dedicated guy holding it... or just put it out and re-lit every time... just lay the hot torch on a brick or something or fabricate something to stand it...

Hey Dogdog,

I'm using the torch to lay some small sections of modified bitumen to cover the flanges of some flat roof vents . (Bathrooms, kitchen exhaust, dryer).

Good tip on bringing something to lay the hot torch down on. I would have learned the hard way. And the fire extinguisher!

The torches you posted are a bit too pricey for my small patch jobs. But when the time comes to redo my roof, I'll look into it.

Red Dragon here also. They sell a little wheeled cart for carrying the tank around with you. IIRC, you can buy a kit that includes the cart, or buy the cart separately.
