i have a guy doing some vinyl siding on my home, im just really confused and need to be educated in common terms of what is the correct way to vent my home.

the house currently has a new roof with sheeting cut and a ridge vent installled.

the gable ends of the house have grills in each end.

there is also vents in the soffit/eves but only on the backside of the house.

he is telling me we can remove the gable vents and still have proper ventilation.
now if this is true, thats great with me. i dont like the look of them at all, but if they need to be there i need to know.

searched a bit and just found a bunch of google images that dont make sense.

thanks!

Typically you don't combine gable and ridge venting as it tends to short circuit the ventilation. Best setup is typically to have continuous soffit venting and a ridge vent.

Ridge vents OR gable vents.. with air entry at the soffit vents.. this way the air goes from bottom to top.. the whole idea is that the air on the underside of the roof sheeting is the same as outside to prevent condensation

I'm in nw Florida. It's very humid here and from October to December and Feb and march everything sweats and is very wet. Last thing I need is mold growing
Thanks for the replies

you need that front side soffit vent. also, you can't just add soffit and ridge vent to an existing roof without it being insulated correctly. if you have a cape style home with insulation in the rafters you need to have the plastic spacers (can't think of the actual term off the top of my head) to allow the air to travel between the insulation and the sheeting. soffit/ridge vents do nothing if those lanes of air are blocked. if you have an attic and the insulation is on the ceiling/attic floor then you are fine.

not to thread jack, but my home has ridge and gable end vents.. i don't have soffits on my home, so is that basically all that can be done for proper ventilation? seems fine to me, just blew in 26" of cellulose this last july!

This. A ridge vent should be a sufficient upper vent on it's own without the gable vents but you need the soffit vents on both sides to function properly.
