Hello all,

Been lurking for awhile and have found an invaluable amount of info as I prepare to begin my 48X32 detached garage build.

After much reading on the subject I am leaning towards a dyed slab with densifier, mainly due to the fact that I will be using the shop for hobby automotive restoration, including welding, grinding, dragging, etc. I will also be installing a 2-post lift.

One question I have not seen asked through my extensive thread review was the best finish to apply to a new slab (broom finish, power trowel, polished) when you plan on applying densifier. Additionally, what is the best recommendation for cure time with a new slab?

My plan at this point is to go with a grey dye and to apply the densifier to the new slab.

I'd appreciate any input regarding slab finish, cure time, and any other tips for this type of application.

Thanks in advance, this is a terrific board!

Marc:

Finish is up to you. Any finish is acceptable for a densifier as it penetrates the surface and leaves no residue on the surface.

Personally speaking, I would opt for a smooth troweled finish. It will be easier to clean. It's easy to make it rough, tough to make it smooth.

Also... I would get our integral color and have the concrete truck mix it right on site. You will have color throughout the slab.

Here is a quick estimate for your reference:

For Gray color , you would need :
28 yards for a 6" slab = 140 pounds of color # 230 @ 4.00 lb = $560.00
19 yards for a 4" slab = 95 pounds of color # 230 @ 4.00 lb = $380.00

Densifier:
5 gallons : 138.00

All prices include freight.

Good luck.

Legacy-

Many thanks for the response- I have learned a lot from your posts in other threads.

I tend to agree with you on the smooth finish- would a good "hand" trowel work or would it be best to use a power trowel?

Also- do you agree with my choice of treatment for this type of use or would your recommendation differ based on what I have described?

I do have epoxy in my attached garage and while I am very happy with the appearance, I am worried about hot metal, grinder sparks, etc. for this building.

Thanks again,

-Marc
