Proper Diamonds for grinding...

There is a rule that you use "softer" metal bond diamonds for hard concrete and "hard" metal bond diamonds for soft concrete for initial grinding stages.

For the typical power troweled six bag/4000 psi mixes used on garage and shop slabs - what do we have ? Hard or soft concrete?

I am planning on going the grind and light polish route with densifier and sealer - to a salt and pepper level through the cream - any advice on good starting grit levels - how about for epoxy prep?

We use 30 grit soft or medium on most power-troweled floors for grinding purposes.
This would be appropriate for a grind/polish as a first cut/step as well.

Generally medium bond 40's are a good place to start, but if you intend to grind through the cream into the aggregate we usually do that with special 'zeros' which are not inexpensive to cut through the aggregate in a reasonable amount of time, and then go up from there.

Don't underestimate the amount of grinding you'll need to get a salt and pepper look. You will also need a large heavy grinder to do this.

If you go the epoxy route you can use medium bond 40-120's, vacuum well and epoxy starting with a primer.

What would be your favorite densfier - sealer combo ?


Usages would be a garage and a eating/foodstuff area. Satin sheen.
