My paint prep cleaner/degreaser of choice is mineral spirits. Gotta wait a bit for it to dry completely, but it's worked pretty well in the past. But I'm also no perfectionist when it comes to painting. sounds like there may be some better options out there though?

Now that some others have mentioned it, I guess my dry times are quite long with rustoleum also. Krylon is better? Any others that are readily available and reasonable priced?

One thing I have not seen mentioned is humidity. Most labels on spray cans recommend 60% humidity or less. Try breaking that rule and you'll likely get a bad "orange peel" effect. Both ambient temp and humidity should meet the recommended minimums for the paint to cure properly. RTFL!
