I recently purchased a generator to run my compressor in the home shop as I do not have sufficient power to do so (garage is fed from house via extension cord which will be addressed when new garage is built). Anyways the generator has 15A breakers with two standard 3 prong outlets. It also has another style outlet (which I'm told is 30A), 3 prong, but the flat prongs are horizontal rather than vertical. I cannot even find a picture online of the male end of this as I don't know what to call it. I checked a few stores in my small town and no luck. Can anyone lead me in the right direction?? Thanks

Male and female cord ends should be available at any home store, will have to make your own extension cord unless you want to order online.

Nema 6-15 240v 15a

240V ehhhh... guess I should check before I go plugging my 120v compressor into that plug. Thanks!

Saving this for future reference! Thank you!

Yes was planning on making a short cord rather than change the end on my compressor.

What is the HP rating on the comp?

Tried it in the 15A plug on the generator, figuring it'd run it, but the breaker pops after a few seconds. I may need to buy a bigger generator....

Yes, that initial startup current is the kicker... I don't even know if a generator with a 20A breaker will hold. The generator breakers seem to be a little more touchy than a household one.

Why not re-wire your compressor for 240v and run it on that generator? All you will need is to get the plug and switch wires as directed on the diagram.

There is a great app I use at work a lot to determine cord cap NEMA names and specs. Just type in NEMA in your playstore on your phone and download the Summit Electric app. You just answer a few questions about what you do know about your plug and will weed out the ones that don't match. Once the number of options drops down you look at the pictures to match up. It will give you a NEMA number and wiring diagram for your device. I have discovered that lots of times the customer has just used whatever cap they had on hand and it's common to see a 120/240v cap used for 3 phase. In that case we remove their cap and install one of our own.

Like above person said, 30A is a special 120V receptacle, a TT-30R. You would not have this anywhere in a home normally.

50A is a more common 120/240v TT-50R receptacle.
