During my garage reorganization I found an outlet box in the attic where the wires were terminated with nuts (white, black, red) and not connected to anything. I couldn't find my old voltage detector so I went out and bought a new Greenlee kit to see if the wires were live or not.
I get up in the attic and touch the covered wires with the tester and it will light up and beep on the black and red 99% of the time indicating they're hot. If it touch the white wire immediately after one of the live wires, 50% of the time it will signal it as hot. If I tap the tip of the detector on a non conductive surface like plywood and then touch the white wire, 99% of the time it will not indicate it's live.
So, am I doing something wrong here? I am sure that everything is wired right with the white being ground, etc, but if I'm getting a false positive 50% of the time it doesn't make me warm and fuzzy when I try to work with the wiring. Any tips on which methods provide the most accurate way to test if a wire is live?
It got to the point where the copper line coming into the A/C handler was acting like it was live. I also have a clamp on voltage meter I can use to test if that would be better?
