Hi,

I'll set the stage - new attached 32 x 28 x 12 garage with 32 x 12 x 7 attic. Fully insulated - r19/r38.

HVAC options:
1) heatpump with propane furnace for backup
2) reznor plus split system non ducted - not sure if I need separate system for attic area. - I do have an open permanent stairway to the attic.

Tough getting HVAC estimates now - they are all busy with the AC season.

One guy siad they don't do ducting in garages - vapor/fumes concerns, so 2) above is the only way they go. I think that 1) might be cheapest and best for keeping both areas controlled.

Comments?

I do NOT plan for the attic to be a bedroom or any more than storage or possible makeshift office or workout room or man-cave.

Thanks,
Tom

My garage is about the same size as yours (25x33x13). I just started using my 2-ton split system this week, and it is working great. I have radiant heat in the floor so don't use the heating capability. In any case, my unit can act as a ductless heat pump.

One advantage of a split system is that you can install it yourself.

I doubt you'd need/want a unit in the attic if used for storage. If you are going to use it more than that then a smaller split unit would be a good choice. My upstairs is a finished apartment and has a 1.5 ton split unit as well.

I've got a 2-ton 24000btu mini-split heat pump in my 38x28x12.

After all the research and pricing around, a mini-split was the cheapest route to go, mainly because I could just buy it and install it myself. Most come precharged and ready to go.

If the garage is one large room then ducting is not really needed, and these work great. It's precisely what they are designed for.

As for the upstairs I would just get a second smaller minispilt in the future if you really find you need it. And just install a ceiling fan or two up there for now.
