Prospect of a Parker

American vices are extremely rare on this side of The Pond but I have a chance of landing a Parker 270 that comes in a bundle of other hardware that should go for around £10.



Can anyone tell me what vintage the 270 would be and what the original colour would have been originally?

That looks pretty rough but if its not broken and works correctly I would be all over it for 10 bucks.

Vintage early first half of the 20th century, probably 1920s-30s. That is a move-able rear jaw model with swivel base. The original color would probably have been black. The bulb on the end of the lead screw that the handle goes through gives the clue to its relatively old (pre-WWII) vintage. Someone here may know the exact mfg. dates for that model - mine is just an educated guess. Well worth the 10 lbs.

I'm thinking its a touch older, more like 1900-1910. In my research on my Parker 273, the name on the dynamic jaw came earlier, then it was moved to the static jaw.

If I could drive over there I would try to beat you to it go get that vise

That is a rare vise here and well worth many times more than ten pounds.

The original color should of been a flat black with yellow lettering. A member on here was able to pick up a NOS Parker that was stored in a box for 75 years and that was the paint scheme of the vise.

I guessing you notice but the swivel base for the vise isn't original. That appears to be something that was bolted on as a replacement. I've got a handful of those 270/271's and the "ears" come to a point, not a flat edge.

Its still worth every penny of the asking price though

^^^ I agree with BigCaddy. Also the leading edge hanging over the mounting would indicate the vise was not designed with a swivel base. The swivel base patent is around 1910 or so, but they still made a choice of vises with and without swivel bases for a while. That doesn't nail any time frame down but narrows it somewhat.

Parker began making vises around the mid 1800s though.
