BTDT with a fleck from a grinder.

I've also had to have a metal splinter recovered from the top of my thumb after beating on something with a ball peen hammer.

I have learned to wear glasses most of the time and when grinding/etc, I wear glasses and a full face shield.

Those Uvex shields look good. Might get one.

I was working under my car one day and some crud fell into my eyes. That was fun to rinse out. $10 for a good pair of safety glasses solved that issue. It's better to be safe

I actually had small fleck of metal land and embed in my eye, from driving with my window down on a nice summer day. It was one of the most uncomfortable feelings I've ever had. Went to the ER, and the doctor on staff couldn't find anything after spending half an hour with dyes and a magnifying device, and suggested that I see a doctor of optometry or what ever the next day. One excruciating night later, the DO found it within a minute and than removed it before I had even signed the release forms saying it was that important to get it out than and there.

They were most likely Work Comp cases and that's what they told the doctor they were wearing.

It's generally irrelevant with workers compensation claims. Fault is not ascertained, it doesn't matter who's fault it is, as long as the accident happened at work. It's part of the compensation bargain that was struck, in exchange for relinquishing the right to sue for tort negligence... Which unfortunately makes it exceptionally precarious to accept workers compensation without consulting a lawyer beforehand.

I learned to wear eye protection from a tree surgeon we knew. He never wore safety glasses because they would fog up on him. Then one day he woke up with two detached retinas. This was back before they could fix that. The life changes he went through - losing his business and income was enough to convince me.

The thing that pisses me off the most, and to this day, was that some people would short change my friend. They'd give him singles and tell him they were fives or tens.

There is a very special place in Hell for people like this. I just pray, for mine and
my family's sake, that I never run into them when I have a 24" breaker bar or
a BFH in my hand..... Bastards. :twak:
