Hello everyone,

I have a driveway that is about 1 year old.
I noticed that last winter created some small craters where cars where parked (perhaps from vehicles depositing salt).
I would like to protect my driveway.

I believe I should apply a sealer.
Since it's the driveway, I don't want to send too much, and I think something at the big box stores would work for me.

Questions:
1. Am I correct to use concrete/masonry sealer? These will protect against salt, correct?
2. I believe after the sealer is applied, the concrete will become waterproof... won't that make the driveway dangerous to walk on when wet?

Thanks for your feedback!

A siliconate (notice the spelling) penetrating sealer works well for driveways and walkways. It penetrates the concrete and seals it just at the surface. It is a non-film forming sealer which means that it will provide for the same anti-slip properties as bare concrete with nothing on it. They will protect concrete for years without requiring reapplication. They protect the concrete from freeze/thaw issues, road salts, deicing fluids, as well as pitting and spalling.

Film forming sealers, such as acrylic, will provide a slippery surface unless a non-slip aggregate is applied. They will require reapplication every year or two.

Stay away from the silicone sealers at the big box stores. These look great at first because they repel water well, but they wear out fast and require reapplication. You will spend much more when you have to reapply every year.

I recently bought this during a sale at Sherwin Williams. I haven't put it down yet.

This is one of the penetrating varieties previously mentioned.

Not a fan of this one as siloxane is similar to silicone. Works fine the first year and has to be reapplied after that. It just wears too fast.

Both of these are good siliconate sealers.

This one from Concrete Sealers USA works well also.
