Protecting mini split lines during demolition

I'm prepping to have the 1st floor area demo'd. I ran lineset, comms, drains from the 3rd and 2nd floor thru the 1st to the basement. All these lines are currently exposed on first floor. See pic.

I can't expect the demo crew to work gently around the mini split equipment. My plan is to put up some temporary 2x4 framing up and sheath it off.

Is 1/8 hardboard the right material to sheath with here? By "right" I mean strong enough and most cost effective. 4x8 sheets are $14.

Looks like the building supplier near me has 1/4 masonite. I think with 2x4 framing behind it, masonite will be strong enough.

Good idea with the spray paint. Bright red.
