Is this a good ratchet? I found it on a yard sale pretty reasonably couple bucks appears to be brand new says Proto 5452 BL. I couldn't get a good picture of the number and it also says professional I have to figure out how to open it and grease it it sounds dry.714d7463c4dba7db3fb51de52fff0ae1.jpgb89df087291fd13cf00423744c8d3b2b.jpg61252ba65f97beaacad6326b0d9edce1.jpg

I came across a rebuild kit for one that was bundled with some other things I purchased. I was intrigued so I found a NOS one to go with it. It sounds great on paper - fine tooth, quick release, and even has a knurled turn ring on it. The Achilles heel of this ratchet IMHO is that it has excessive backdrag in the one I experienced despite pulling it apart and lubing it. Maybe others are better but I found more modern mechanisms to be much smoother with less backdrag. The design seems robust though.

Proto and SK were the "go to" tools for many auto mechanics before they all became "technicians." I don't know much about that specific ratchet but the Proto and SK round head ratchets were pretty rugged, usually fine toothed, and only a small step below classic Snap-On in performance and reliability. Good buy!

I don't remember how to take it apart for lubrication but when we were in a hurry, we used to dunk the head in oil overnight. In one, rather rough, shop I worked in; that's all we ever did and the ratchets still survived.

Yeah, this has the knurled turn wheel as well.
The whole body is Black oxide.
To be honest, I haven't used it yet. It had some slight surface rust on it, even light light rust on the knurled handle.
Believe it or not, a nylon scrubbie pad cleaned it up perfectly. Not the scotch brite kind, but more 0f a plastic/nylon net type.
I'll have to watch for the back drag. I have lots 0f other ratchets if it's an issue.
How old are these ratchets?

Ok, thanks.
Looks like sort of a snap ring of some sort.
I'll have to look better.
We had like a gypsy tool man years ago. Sk was one of my 1st ratchets.
It was a long 1/2" drive flex head. It was pretty rugged.
Never skipped or reversed direction.
1st snap on ratchets I had both changed direction breaking something loose.
Had to put up with the "they all do that" B/S for years.
Finely got them warranted through snap on website.
Sent me the fine tooth ones too. [emoji2]

I have one in chrome, bought it at a yard sale. It looks to be well used. I agree with montanafordman, back drag is high. I never use it.

Iirc, it has one of the "keyring" style snap rings holding it together like a Wright ratchet. I use a 90° pick and work it under and around til it comes off.

DO NOT GET THAT RATCHET!

The pin like quick release button is sprung very heavy and will hurt your thumb. It's not really a button; it's more like a torture device.

Yeah, feels pretty smooth now that I lubed it.
It was Bone Dry. Appeared un-used inside too.

I don't know bud, again, I didn't really use it yet, but especially after oiling the QR, and oiling and greasing the gears, the QR did not seem to bother me.
Did you try oiling it?
