Hi guys,

I've recently been to a local Grainger and we all know they aren't the cheapest choice when it comes to toolboxes (actually everything that they sell)

I found this:

Proto 450 series, model number J456646-12RD
attachment.php

Proto 66" bottom cabinet
Size 66"x42"x27"
Weight 700#
Drawer Load 200#

I did some investigating and regular price for this box comes up between 5k and 6k.

They have it on clearance for... $ 1900 :eyecrazy:

I currently own a 42" Trinity and a 27 HF box and I'm currently not really looking for a new toolbox, but this offer is just too good to pass and is probably the only time I'm going to get this close to a "pro" toolbox this cheap.

What do you guys think?

That's the exact same box that is rebranded for ULine, for $600.

That sticker must be pretty expensive.

One of those boxes is 27" deep with 12 drawers and weighs 700 lbs while the other one is 18" deep with 11 drawers and weighs 234 pounds...yeah, they are exactly the same box.

And imported. The U-Line actually looks like its from the same supplier as the HF44.

The Proto Boxes are rebadged MACs at realistic prices. The larger ones like in the OP are a variation of the MB1350 Macsimizer which run about $8000+ list off the truck. The Proto rebadges are one of the best kept secret in the auto tool world.

Great price....original list was over $9,000. That one has been discontinued and replaced by the J556646 .

Looks like a nice box. How many does the store have?

I just checked their online inventory checker, and it shows unavailable nationwide.

Maybe they no longer list it in their inventory checker so you might need to call your local grainger to check inventory.

Sorry to burst the bubble, but it is not Grainger in the US.

$9,000 for an empty tool box? You'd have to be a millionaire crack smoker to shell out that kind of money for a tool box. But that's just me talkin'.

The average american spends $8K flushing money out of their wallet on every car they own (depreciation, maintenance, insurance fees...petrol,...money you never see again/invest)

...so basically alot of people spend $8-9k/year just to show up to work...

Pro toolbox guy... buys a box for $8-9K and uses it to make his salary for 10 years...thats $900/year of expense never seen again...in other words, its still 1/10th of the money as the peson spends on a car...and its a main asset for productivity on the job...stores and secures anywhere from 10-20-50K worth of tools

and its still a good asset with resale value at the end of the 10 years.

Doesn't change the fact that you can get twice the toolbox for a third of the money.

Nobody is getting twice the toolbox (of this Proto) at 1/3 of the money
we are re talking about here ...:scared:...(1900/3=$650)

You just attempted to justify $9000. Not $1500.

I used $9k because it matchets $/$ the data for another expenditure people don't seem to think is frivioulous...ie, the running expense of a late-model toyota Camry

:lol_hitti

You're not going to find a box at $3k either that is twice this Proto, unless you start using words like USED and SNAP-ON and DID NOT PAY RETAIL...which just begs the point of quoting retail prices....

A 60" wide, 59“ high 28" deep vidmar runs around $3000, built to order. Twice the toolbox of the proto shown here. :)

Weights appear roughly identical so....wheres the "twice" from? Only thing Vidmar has over a truck box is incredible drawer slide weight limits but unless you're going to fill the box with liquid concrete you'll never know it.

Almost twice as high, and deeper. Plus just a better box, 400lb drawer suspension.

Nobody (shopping for a 40 inch tall box) really wants a box twice as high...you lose the worsurface...so thats not a feature in the plust column for the lista...

In general, the snap-on style boxes are the way they are because they are desined propertly. Listas are nice how they are built, but they don't always have the best layout and features...the original models were parts cabinents not working tool boxes...

Of course you can buy a bunch of listas and get a custome setup if you really lay out the dough.:lol:
