I like Proto and used there stuff before when the shop provided the tools. They really do have some quality stuff. How is the warranty service? Can you just turn it in no questions asked? Do you mail it or take it to a dealer?

If you like Proto but want the warranty of a tool truck, they don't do it. All tools have to be mailed in and replacements mailed to you.

I had to warranty a ratcheting wrench that locked up on me. Called Proto, they told me to mail it to them, never heard back for about 6 weeks. Called them again, they told me this time to call their parent company Stanley. Had to tell them my story, provide my tracking info, they said it was probably lost as Proto doesn't handle their own warranties and they had no idea why they told me to mail it to them. So stanley eventually handled it for me. It took maybe 9 weeks total. It was handled though.

My shop has an account with MSC and Grainger. I buy proto because if I break something I can hand the broken tool to my parts guy and he'll buy me a new one within the week.

That's not a bad turn around.

J5250HTC - PROTO® 3/8" DRIVE PRECISION 90 PEAR HEAD RATCHET STANDARD 13"- FULL POLISH
98.72

I was quoted $95 from a local Mac dealer. Hopefully we'll be able to buy from Zoro for cheaper.

Requested and received quotes on these today from our Proto distributor:

J5249HTC - PROTO® 3/8" DRIVE PRECISION 90 PEAR HEAD RATCHET STANDARD 7"- FULL POLISH
89.74

J5250HTC - PROTO® 3/8" DRIVE PRECISION 90 PEAR HEAD RATCHET STANDARD 13"- FULL POLISH
98.72

J5449HTC - PROTO® 1/2" DRIVE PRECISION 90 PEAR HEAD RATCHET STANDARD 11"- FULL POLISH
134.63

J5450HTC - PROTO® 1/2" DRIVE PRECISION 90 PEAR HEAD RATCHET LONG 18"- FULL POLISH
148.09

J5426HTC - PROTO® 1/2" DRIVE PRECISION 90 PEAR HEAD RATCHET EXTRA LONG 26"- FULL POLISH
206.44

Those are approaching Snap On Dual 80 prices for Proto. As much as I like the look of those ratchets, I think I'll just stick with the Snap Ons.

I'm really happy to see these.

A long handle 1/4" drive was something that I've really wanted from Proto for a while. And the extra long 1/2" drive options and the addition of flex heads to the premium line is much needed as well.

Nothing matters 'till I see what zoro lists them for.

Yeah. I like the looks of the 1/2" long in chrome, but unless it's about half what was shown earlier in the thread, I'll either go Snappy or do without. It's not like I need a 1/2" long ratchet very often.

These look great however,

No warranty dealer around me and having to mail ratchets away is a no go for me.

That and the knurling hurts my sensitive hands, I have never had my hand slip off a ratchet handle... knurling or markings on sockets though is great.

Anyone find these in the wild yet?

Trident-supply.com can special order them for you just request a quote from them

Toolsource.com has them listed on their website but, they may or may not have the ratchet in stock depending on model.

Pricing is close to what the MAC versions cost. Perhaps pricing will drop once they are more plentiful and readily available. :dunno:

Finally got my PROTO J5249HTCF ratchet today and I'm kind of disappointed. First off, the direction switch isn't metal. It's some kind of plastic. Secondly, the recess for the flex head pin wasn't drilled deep enough so, the head of the shouldered pin sticks out a good 1/16 of an inch (see last picture below). This wouldn't be a big deal on a longer flex head ratchet but this ratchet is only like 7 11/16 inches long and my normal thumb placement rests against the pin head which isn't comfortable.
I chose this PROTO ratchet mainly because MAC doesn't offer one in this length with a flex head or an all metal handle :wtf:

It has nice chrome, I like the smooth-knurled-smooth handle, nice crisp ratchet action. I will probably buy more fixed head versions of these ratchets but, i'm a little gun shy of the flex heads right now and have more than a few of the MAC versions in flex head trim. The PROTO Precision 90 ratchets are far from cheap and I would expect better from PROTO:dunno:

Here's a few crappy photos comparing a longer MAC 3/8 drive flex head to the PROTO.

Uh oh, I have mine ordered through my local place. It's the 1/2 long handle flex head. We'll see how it is when it comes in. Proto shipped it Monday.

You sure its plastic and not a thick enamel coating? That would be a really weird change. The introductory street prices are high enough that i'd probably end up returning it.

As far as the screw I think my MAC stuck out a little as well (sold it off because its not a QR)

Interesting as the selector switch on the macs look metal as do the pictures on spec sheet and since they appear to be sister ratchets

I wish we had a mac dealer they seem scarce here in Atlanta area

x2, I have an older Proto indexing ratchet in 3/8, both the direction lever and lever for index have a coating that chips off.

I was going to try one of these, but am also waiting to see the new SK.

Now I'm really going to wait and see what people think before replacing what I have now (mixed brands, etc). I was hoping to do it all at once as the "last buy" for ratchets.

Always grateful for posts like this!

Is it possible to knock the pin out and put it in from the other side?

FedWrench did say pin but is it a pin or a small threaded fastener (so you can tighten it up)?

Either way, while you shouldn't have to do this....it should be fixable, no? If it's a counterbored hole stick it in a mill and counterbore deeper. You could also split the difference and modify the pin I'd think........ie if it protrudes 60 thou counterbore 30 thou deeper and take 30 thou off the head of the pin.

Per Charles Burket, product specialist, Proto, the selector switch on all models of Proto's "Precision 90" pear-head ratchet is metal, not plastic.

Looks like an interesting design.

I'm really hopeful SK comes out with a new roto-ratchet, then with having all the contour handle wrights I should be all set, though I do want a 42" wright just cause, but then I can stop.

Until I get to start buying the ones for my kids in a couple years.

Ok. I took a 5/16 drill bit today and drilled the hole a little deeper to accomadate the T27 screw head. Sorry, I called it a pin. I then filed off a couple of threads on the opposite side to make everything smooth & flush on both sides.

Ok. if the direction switch is in fact metal, it's not magnetic, it's very lightweight, and has the detail of a tiny American flag, USA, & the words off and on etched into it. I also believe it's the same material as the silver switch found on the MAC Axis ratchets that I own but the black version feels different. Curiosity hasn't gotten the best of me yet to make me want to cut through the direction switch yet :dunno:

I really didn't want to give the vendor any press as I ordered the ratchet on 11/27/16 with a gift card and didn't get the ratchet until 1/16/17. I hate when vendors list items on their website only not to have them in stock. Are you listening Toolsource? Price on sale :)lol:) was $107 with free shipping :)lol:). Granted, I probably could have found an FF80 easier & cheaper but, I was trying to support PROTO's new ratchet release. No good deed goes unpunished :wtf:

Even though this acquisition didn't go as smoothly as I hoped for, I'm not throwing the baby out with the bath water, and I'll probably pick up some long handled fixed head versions once other vendors have stock.

I am also waiting to see what SK comes out with and what shape the production handle ends up being. Time will tell.

I'll have to ask my local Proto dealer what their price is on one, I've been waiting for these for awhile.

.

You should take some pics and email Proto. Explain your reasoning and what you did to fix it. Maybe they'll improve upon their new design.

You have a link to the SK thread(s) if there is one? It won't let me search SK because it's too short of a term.
