New here, looking to acquire some Proto Big Dawg ratchets. Does anybody have the pages from the proto catalog listing the part numbers or know the part numbers for the different ratchets? Any help on tracking one down would be greatly appreciated.

These have been discountinued for over a decade.
The model numbers were the same as their classic pear head ratchets...
BUT with a "P" added to the end.
J4749P 1/4
J5249P 3/8
J5250P 3/8 long
J5449P 1/2
J5450P 1/2 long

They also had a comfort grip version with a "G" added to the model, for example, J5250PG.

The Big Dawg series was replaced by the Premium Pear Head series.
The model numbers for these follow a similar pattern, except the standard numbers are followed by a "XL". For example, J5250XL.

Proto is also currently working on releasing the newest Precision 90 Pear Head series.

Hope this helps.

Sweet, that's exactly what I was looking for. It will help a lot in my searches. I'm not super determined to get one, but if I come across one I'll probably pick one up. I do have one of the new 90 tooth Protos on order at my local dealer. I guess Proto just started stocking them. Super excited to get my hands on one after what I've heard about the Mac versions.

Do you have any of the XL ratchets? Availability is pretty good but I don't know if they are going to be discontinued with the 90 tooth coming soon. They are one of my favorite ratchets.

Not yet, I currently only have a handful of the 24 tooth classic pear heads (5, 1/4,3/8, 2 1/2,3/4) and a round head facom design 3/8. I've been looking at the XL ratchets. My order for the 90 tooth proto J5450HTCF went through Friday (if they remembered to add it to the order) so I should have one of those in my hand hopefully by the end of next week.

It is the one tool from Proto that I don't like. The head is so big. It is ok back in the old day where there are plenty of room in the engine bay. But today engine bay is so tight. That big dawg ratchet is obselescent. They should stop making that ratchet.

ummm.......the big dawg is not the same as the old proto and plomb pearheads.

it is comparable in size to a dual 80.

knurled knut's list is pretty spot on.

i have a fair amount of time with big dawgs. the hard handle versions are some of my favorites. i have 8 of them. 5 hard handles and 3 knurled versions

they were notorious for the screws breaking or coming loose. the screws are nearly impossible to replace and if they happen to fall apart the spring and pin are easily lost or damaged. i doubt if you could damage the pawl or gear if you wanted to. if the screws are kept tight they are pretty trouble free. lock tite or slightly knurling the threads does the trick.

the 3/8 and 1/2 drive are the better. 1/4 is just not as smooth but i still like them. be aware that proto no longer supports them and rebuild kits are scarce as hen's teeth. fortunately i stocked up when grainger cleared them out. i have a lifetime supply and have only ever used one kit.:pimpflash:pimpflash

Yes, I read on another thread about the few other ways people have found ways to rebuild them. One person said they found a duralast ratchet with screws that worked and a torque wrench rebuild kit that had similar internals. It seems that the weaknesses in the design, from the info in other threads on here, that ended up manifesting themselves were the screws that could be solved with loctite and a weak direction selector lever. Is this why they were only available for such a short period of time?

supposedly mac had them as well. don't know if they support them either though. fortunately i have always had the parts i needed.

the ratchet mechanism, plate and handle are hell for stout and yes the screws are the weak point. rather than fix the problem, they scrapped the whole lineup. too bad.... they are a great looking, feeling and working ratchet whether they are chrome, black or hard handled.

i have a pretty simple, reliable method to search ebay for them that filters out most of the other models. pm me if interested.

I second the Proto XL. The 15" 1/2 drive is a strong, comfortable ratchet. Use it all the time for equipment repair.

Maybe get one while they are still available. Probably cheaper than the new 90 tooth versions.

I have a full set of the XL's. 1/4, 3/8 std and long, 1/2 std and long. I recently sent the 1/4 to proto becuase it was starting to slip. I could have bought a repair kit for $25, but for $10 shipping proto will replace for free. I might stock up on repair kits now though.

I think I'll hold out for the flex head 90t Proto ratchets 1/4 and 3/8 at least and not just jump onto the first 90t protos ever.

Didn't they?

Yes. MAC/PROTO stopped making the Big Dawg series more than a few years ago. In PROTO trim I believe it was replaced with the premium pear head ratchet and the new precision 90 series. MAC didn't offer a 45 tooth premium pear head version but, debuted the Axis 90 tooth series a year or so ago.

I purchased a Proto 6062F Big Dawg ratchet head torque wrench and am having a devil of a time finding a rebuild kit for it. The ratchet pieces came in a baggie. I can probably figure out the thread pitch of the screws and order new ones (I only have one) but I'm wondering if I have all of the ratchet pieces

Funny that this should come up now.....

Gentlemen:
There was a lot of 36 new NOS Proto J4749P 1/4" drive "Big Dawg" ratchets sold on Ebay 03/02/18 for a high bid of $232.00 + $10.00 shipping.
(unit cost $6.722 each)
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Proto-Ratchet-Bulk-1-4-drive-/202238277996

My guess is that these will turn up on Ebay (or some other online venue) in the near future. If this is something you're interested in, keep your eyes open.
If the buyer lists them on Ebay, I will be sure to post them in the "Ebay hot deals" thread.
These are the photos from the Ebay ad:

Proto J4749P 1.4 drive 'Big Dawg' ratchet (Ebay 202238277996 01).jpgProto J4749P 1.4 drive 'Big Dawg' ratchet (Ebay 202238277996 02).jpgProto J4749P 1.4 drive 'Big Dawg' ratchet (Ebay 202238277996 03).jpg

I concur with the statements above about Proto no longer supporting this item. When I first saw the listing I dug around on the web and the best information I could find with Google searches was on (drum roll) GarageJournal.com ;)

I purchased some 3-48 and M2.5-.45 machine screws to replace the missing screw in my Big Dawg torque wrench. The 3-48 are flat head philips and the M2.5 are button head allen. I'll post some pics when they get here.

One of my big dawg ratchets broke a screw or two over the years, and IIRC, my MAC truck guy gave me standard Mac (non big dawg) screws to put it back together with.

I gave up on my 1/4" drive version, after putting a couple rebuild kits in it over the years and dealing with broken screws.. I finally sent it into proto. They gave me the old school pear head j4749 in exchange.
I still have the 3/8 Big dawg but the thing is a hassle to use at work because if you spin the extension or socket too fast to speed a fastener off, the ratchet mechanism will reverse on you. that thing is in my home tool box, I think

The 1/4" Big Dawg ratchet action was not as sweet as I was expecting, given my experience with other premium ratchets from Snap On, Matco and vintage Proto. If it were a typical 1/4" ratchet and not a torque wrench, it would bother me more. The vintage Protos in my collection were sweeter in action after i disassembled them, cleaned and greased the gear and pawl. Before I wrap up this rebuild, I'll grease the gear then replace and loctite the screws. After that I won't give it much thought.

So, the screws I ordered came. 3-54 or M2.5 is most certainly not the right size for this ratchet head. I’m guessing it’s the next smaller size down. It really ***** because I spent almost $20 on machine screw assortments for screws that don’t fit.

The screws in my ratchet torque wrench measure approximately .0825” in diameter. The 2.5mm screws measure .095” in diameter.

Pull some screws out of an old 30 tooth mac ratchet.. I swear they fit.. like said above, my mac tools guy fixed one for me using those screws
