I picked up a newer style 1/2" Proto ratchet today, figured I post a few pictures. 45 tooth gear feels nice, head is on the wide side.

It's also a little on the heavy side. Here's a picture from an earlier thread I posted to.

Fedwrench - I missed the post where you had the picture. The head is wider, but thinner than the Big Dawg. I personally like the Big Dawg better.

Yeah, I still don't understand why the Big Dawg didn't have a longer market run. The new Protos are pretty stout. I picked up 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, and 1/2 extra long on Ebay. I was surprised to see they were US made. They are similiar to the imported ones Mac sells except the Proto version doesn't have a quick release.

would be interesting to see a side by side comparison of the origional big dawg and this one.... is the head actually wider or is it just the new shape playing tricks on us?

personally, i liked the handle on the old big dawg better.... just has a nice feel to it... combination of heft and grip

thanks for the picture vulturej... i do see what you mean as far as where the handle meets the head, however, i could see where the progressive taper could be nice in some spots

maybe the most interesting thing i notice about the new vs old is no screws...and a snap ring on the new

how is the action in the new one copared to old...

Vulture,

I'm with you. I picked up a 3/8 Big Dawg Proto for $19 on ebay. I love how that thing feels. The ratcheting action, the weight, everything about it feels great to me. This is purely subjective, of course, so opinions may vary.
