found a big dawg on ebay I'm watching but the ad says that it's only 24 teeth, 15 deg arc, it's 1/2" drive, #5450PBL

done a lot of searching and all the sources I see say it has 45 teeth, is the ebay ad just wrong? or were two different versions of this ratchet? it's been a day and he's not responded to my inquiry, and of course, in an auction, time is of the essence.

not positive, but i would say ebay add is wrong,,,imagine how rough a 24 count would feel.... aditional note... i believe proto discontinued the PBL series..... they are more pear head like other ratchets.... have a 3/8 version... it is also a finer count than the normal proto ratchet....

I think I found my answer, he copied and pasted the specs from the J5450BL which is still on the proto website, the 5450PBL is discontinued

I believe it should actually be 52 teeth. Ebay ads always cut and paste the wrong information. Verify the model number and don't sweat the description.

Proto has made 24 tooth ratchets for years.....VERY strong.....but VERY rough!!

I have one of those 24 count 1/2 inch drive long ratchets. I put the red lube of love in it. I understand that it isn't sealed it does not leak too bad. You just have to use the lube sparingly. It is the toughest ratchet I have ever used. I am upgrading all my old ratchets but this old dog is staying in the drawer right where it belongs.

Same here! I have the 1/2, 24 tooth model and that sucker is practically indestructible. Believe it or not, once I added some of that "Superlube" stuff (I used it sparingly, same as you), it became smooth as glass. Sound and feel were both dramatically improved and it's even more enjoyable to use it now.

Glad to see I'm not the only fan of the older models. I have the Big Dawgs and they have their place, but for brute strength it's 24 tooth FTW.

Never used the Big Dawg Proto, but have use the standard PROTO 3/8 drive 5249BL and the 1/2 drive 5449BL. Pretty strong ratchets, maybe cruder compared to todays very fine tooth stuff, but strong. Snag up those rebuild kits when you can find them because Proto is slowly discontinuing them for these clasic ratchets. In fact the current brochure/catalog doesn't list the 5259RK kit for the 3/8 inch drive ratchet. I have a kit for each that I keep on hand as a "just-in-case" insurance. Those two rebuild kits have sat in my drawer for a couple decades.

The eBay ad is wrong. The following is taken from an older catalogue...:

1/2" DRIVE BIG DAWGTM LONG HANDLE PEAR HEAD RATCHET—PROTOBLACK™
• Black oxide finish.
• Long handle for added leverage and more torque.
• 45 tooth gear/floating pawl design for small 6.8°arc swing.
• 13% smaller head for access in tight work areas.
• Reversing lever designed for quick, one hand operation.
Product Weight
ID No. Overall Length lbs. Repair Kit
5450PBL 16" 1.96 12RPK
Fed'l Specs.: GGG-W-641E
ANSI Spec.: B107.10M

Although there are only 45 teeth, because of the way the dual pawl works, it actually acts as if there are more. In the case of the 1/2", I count 54...

I've also picked up a rebuild kit for my 1/2 drive version of this ratchet. Haven't gotten a 3/8 yet, but if I do I'll have to pick up the kit for it as well. Like you, I suspect I'll not need it for a long time, but it never hurts to have one on hand. :spit:

I have 60+ year-old Plomb (pre-Proto) 3/8" & 1/2" drive, 24 tooth ratchets, that STILL work as good as the day they came from the factory.
We'll be walking around on Mars, long before those bad-boyz expire!!

Steve

Used both of mine on the job daily for 15 years, semi-regularly for another 10 years, and now they get used only when I tinker or repair something for us or friends and those ratchets are still going strong. I have kept the same rebuild kits on hand for the last 20 years, but if yours is still going strong after 60+ years as a Plomb pre-Proto then I'll likely never need my rebuilds. Then again I never thought I would, but ya never know.
