I need a 20" 1/2 drive chrome extension. The proto version is 2/3 the price of the SK. I know the SK has detents (which I like better). I've seen a lot of photos of Proto chrome extensions with the a hole in the female end (like for a locking pin or the ball on the drive end of a ratchet) instead of detents, but that has been on mostly 3/4 drive extensions I've seen it on. Proto's catalog really doesn't have any photos that show detents or a hole for their 1/4-1/2 extensions.

So, in your experience, have your proto CHROME (non impact) extensions had the 4 detent set up or a drilled hole through one side?

They should have 4 detents unless they're very old stock.

Yes from what I've seen the older Proto has the hole while the newer has 4 detents. You can find nos Proto on eBay very cheap. FWIW I bought a 1/2" Chinese Craftsman 20" extension from Sears a few months back when it was on sale for like $9 and it has worked just the same as my Stanley USA 20" extension. I don't know how often you use a 20" extension, but it suits my occasional needs just fine.

You might also consider a Blackhawk extension; they are Proto's value line of hand tools. They're very good quality, the sockets and extensions all appear to be US made, and have 4 detents.

Wonderful news everyone, thanks! I was planning on buying from zoro with their 25% off sale coming up, so it'll be pretty cheap going with the proto!
