I'm in the market for a new set of screwdrivers. I'm pretty much set on the proto, but still considering snap on and witte maxpro. My question is; A) are these protos a good buy, and B) do all the proto sets come in a plastic organizer similar to the snap on sets? It may be trivial, but the plastic organizers would be very nice. Thanks!

A)Wait for a Zoro coupon code for 20-25% off $125 or more and then get the 19 pc set. The net price will be around $110-120 and shipping will be free.

There's a Zoro thread in Hot Deals where members post the coupon codes when they come out. I heard that if you put items in the Zoro shopping cart but don't complete the checkout process that they sometimes email you a coupon.

http://www.zoro.com/proto-combo-screwdriver-set-assorted-19-pcs-j1219sc/i/G5291106/

Zoro's everyday price is already lower then Amazon so the coupon sweetens the pot!!!!

You're getting better screwdrivers then SO (IMHO) for about 1/3 the price.

B) They come in a pouch vs a tray.

The 19 piece set was really what I was wanting, I had a feeling that was way too big of a set for plastic trays, but a pouch wouldn't be bad.

That's a good idea to wait on zoro...that's a lot of screwdrivers for the money, thank you for your input!

There is different types of proto screwdrivers. I'd get the ones with the bolsters. So you can put a wrench on them. They are the same as the macs.

I just found that out, I also found they have a satin or full polish finish.

Didn't woodstockva do a write-up on these? Soaked them in all sorts of auto chemicals, and the handles came through unscathed.

My 6PC set of Durateks didn't come in a tray. They are really comfortable to use. They may look like the black area of the handles are soft but they are not. I like the Snap On soft grip instinct the best but if you are working on anything greasy the Proto are the way to go. Very durable tips and handles. Considering the Mac versions are almost double the Proto in price for the same thing with different colors.

I just got the 19 piece Duratek set today. They come in a cardboard box. They look like great screw drivers. These are destined for my work box, I have Snap-on at home, it will be interesting to compare. I was impressed enough with them that I ordered the 9 piece torx driver set.

That's an impressive set you got there!

It appears that the 8 peice set does have a plastic organizer.

Dude, we get that you love that set of the most unusual collection of blade types and lengths but, move past it. The subject is Duratek, not the now obsolete yellow handled drivers. :wtf:

Back to the Durateks, buy the 8 piece combination bolstered screwdriver set. It contains the most useful sizes and the bolstered Durateks are much stronger than the regular durateks. The 8 piece set comes in a nice storage tray unlike the other sets that come in a black and red cardboard box.

Do you guys really like bolstered screwdrivers?

IMHO it means you're applying too much torque on the screw head to the point of destroying/shearing off the screw head vs. removing the fastener.

If the screw won't budge my preference is to look for other solutions while I still have a fighting chance. (heat, impact, penetrent)

Just curious if you all think they're a lifesaver?

That is what bolstered screwdrivers were designed for, the very few times I've used the hex bolster on my screwdrivers, they have never failed, Yet I have seen other people struggle.

I have duratreks at work, they take quite a lot of abuse from being used by many people and the tips, particularly philips as thats what is used the most have held up really well. I'm not a huge fan of the handle, I prefer my Felo 550s that I have at home for the handle grip, but the Protos seem to have taken more abuse, and have shown less wear compared to my Felos.

The only plus of the Duratrek handle seems to be the solvent resistance. Never really had that issue or need whether its work (technology manufacturing and electronics), or at home, working on DIY or cars, etc.

Amazon currently has a number of Duratrek singles for under 10 to 8 dollars. I grabbed several of their philips 2 drivers just because I use those the most so spares never hurt.

Can't comment on the quality of Proto's warranty as I've never needed or tried it, but I have warrantied one Felo screwdriver, and had a brand new one in the mail after returning the busted one several days later.

the chemical resistance is pretty unreal, as I've seen it demod. it's nice being able to have brand new looking drivers after a quick blast or two of brake cleaner.

only issue is that I've only had them for a year and a couple decided to walk off already.
