My dad has many regular tooth proto ratchets and they seem pretty nice so this being a fine tooth version i pulled the trigger on it and bought it. All i have is my clunky course tooth craftsmans which most of the time are fine. The other day, trying to do some car work, i finally had enough and wanted a nice ratchet. I have been working on cars for about 15 yrs or so now and finally decided to buy a nice ratchet. Actually the stanleys at WM dont feel so bad. There pretty smooth and have 72 teeth. I didnt get it though becuase i wanted a trusted good quality one and for the extra 10 bucks i hope i like the proto. Anyone have this model and have any comments about it.

Sorry to burst your bubble but the seller is incorrect in stating that it is a 90 tooth mechanism. It has 45 teeth, with dual pawls.

That being said, it's a good ratchet. I had one that was defective, and I sent it to Proto for a replacement. They sent me an Italian-made one with 72 true teeth. That was one nice ratchet.

And like an idiot I sold it.

Proto makes quality tools and they have a great warranty to back them up.

Not too concerned about the 90 teeth, Stanleys website confirms the 4 degree ratcheting angle so it should be fine enough. How do you get italian made ones? Are they a different number or something? Hopefully this one is a decent one. Im getting tires of cheap built ratchets.

I have this same ratchet as well. It is my go to ratchet for home use. The speeder ring comes in handy, and the thing is built like a tank. The only downside would be you can't get it in any very narrow places, but that's just a reason to buy another thinner ratchet!

This is what I use at work, and if you want another proto with a slimmer head I recommend this one. For the industrial work we do this is hands down the best ratchet I have used.

The Italian one is a J5252F. If yours ever breaks, just send it in to Proto and you'll most likely get one of them as a replacement.

thanks guys. the 5252f looks pretty cool. More than likely i wont break it considering i have never broke a ratchet yet in my life. Ill keep my eye open for a good price on the slim head one. As of now i dont see any on ebay and the cheepest i can find it is about 40 dollars. Thats a little steep for me but if i see a good deal on one ill pick it up. I have two young boys and im sure a few extra ratchets wont hurt.

Those are a tough and long life old school designed Proto ratchet I think you have a life time deal there.

The Italian one is a J5252F. If yours ever breaks, just send it in to Proto and you'll most likely get one of them as a replacement.

Italian made Facom. Got one with same head but rubber handle, and a bit shorter from Facom. Love it!

Well i got the ratchet last night. Very nice. I kinda wish the reversing mechanism was a little bit lower profile but it feels like a solid ratchet.

This looks just like a facom ratchet I had. The fine tooth action was very nice on it, couldnt keep it from coming apart during use though so I traded it in on an s-k 42470 which at the time was my only 1/2 shorter handled ratchet.

I have one of those, it's a nice ratchet. Fine tooth and pretty smooth.

Yup, nice little ratchet. But good luck trying to find a repair kit for it if it breaks. If that happens, I'm sure Proto will replace it with a current model.

I have this ratchet in both 1/4 and 3/8 drive, Ive just never seen anyone else with a similar ratchet and I wondered what you guys thought of them. I like them except that ive noticed the reversing lever is very easy to flip unintentionally.

My mac guy had a small box of ratchet parts for these, since mac used to sell a version of that ratchet with their name on it. I wish I had the part number for the mac version though so it could be easier for him to order.

Also, Grainger, who sells these, also sells the repair kits for like 10 bucks

Bimmer - if you can get the kits from Grainger, I recommend you scoop up all you can. Proto doesn't support these ratchets with kits anymore. They are like gold to those that need them. I know some of the guys here would love to have backup kit just in case.
