What do you get when you're a billion dollar family-owned construction company?

You get Proto to make you your own "house brand" wrenches!

I found this in a used tool store yesterday:

Looks like Proto to me. From Alloy Artifacts:

Here's another Bechtel tool from a recent ebay auction (#260558462411) that I came across trying to find info on these:

Anybody have any other info, examples, photos of tools made for internal corporate use?

I guess Plomb/Proto PWA comes to mind.

Very cool. IIRC, Bell Systems had Proto make some ratcheting specialty items for them. Thanks for sharing.

dont know about hand tools... but i do know about extension cords.

some companies will make custom cords in custom colours (like pink and purple:supergay:)

they will also engrave custom writing like "property of x corp"

Cuts WAY down on their theft and "losses"

I've got a few ignition wrenches marked "Bell Systems" and Proto. I got them from my father who worked for them in the 1950's. I also have a pair of side dykes and maybe a set of needle nose that are marked "Bell Systems" .......I'm not sure who made them. I suspect Klein.

Here's a good story, 30 yrs ago my dad worked for Bechtel [that's the adjustable I sold on ebay] and was working on a nuclear power plant in Mich. One day he's headed to the parking lot and sees these guys throwin' stuff outa the back of a semi trailer into a freshly dug pit, goes over to check it out and it was all tools. Everything you could imagine from grinders to generators. It was part of the "write-off/chargeback" policy of the company. Since he was a supervisor they let him snag a handfull of wrenches, a Milwaulkee cut-off saw and what he could carry away. The next morning the hole was nicely covered over. I've still got most of 'em and they're stamped or embossed with the Bechtel name.
Small world to see the wrench turn up here.

Same thing happened when Bechtel was building a cost plus Nuke plant in Arizona. I worked in the salvage yard for the public utility that the plant was being built for, and we got a lot of Palletainers full of tools to destroy. There were also stories of a lot of large equipment being buried on site. Probably upped the price by 100's of millions.

Something about Bechtel I can't forget. Working at a gas fired power plant in Mantua NJ. years back. While working on my machine I looked over at 2 bechtel guys greasing a crane. Time to change the grease tube, so 1 guy holds the grease gun head while the other guy spins the barrel . Typical of what I saw on that job. Project was shut down and we lost $.

Yea, the Mich Light & Power declaired bankrupcy because the project was so overbudget. The nuc reg commission didn't help anything either...

Had to post this here, I just ran across this today while cleaning, an IBM meter:

ibm.jpg

The ol' Triplett 310, I have a few of these. Very good meters, as classic as a Simpson 270 or 280. Nothing beats a good analog meter for checking capacitors IMO.

My father was an electrical engineer and he always had one of these in his glove box as part of his mobil tool kit. When we would go places and I had to wait in the car I would always take it out and check it out. So of course everytime I use it I think of my dad.

I worked for them on a nuke, they had a tool crib the size of a small Kmart store, brand new everything. Move from one part of the plant to another, didn't take tool box, just got another. It was a real experience, they had their own way of doing things. Some times one could come to the conclusion that no one can **** up that bad by accident, ha

Here's a few pics of what I have to offer the thread. I guess I was mistaken.........I thought I had more of these tools. I'm almost sure of it. Maybe the brother-in-law snagged 'em. Anyway, the wrench is a neat little piece of history.
