Proto oil filter sockets

Hi all, I scored these new on eBay for $20 plus $7 and change shipping. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BNSJDC4/?tag=atomicindus08-20 I will be doing my own Toyota Yaris oil changes since the Toyota dealer got rid of the Castrol rebate program. I need the 65mm 14 flute for Yaris.

I prefer the cast aluminum ones as they tend to last longer and be a bit stronger than stamped steel. Not sure how I feel about nylon ones.

I didn't know about them either. Til I researched Yaris oil changes and found out the craftsman adjustable oil filter wrench may have trouble with such a small filter. I'm excited to try them.

They work well and they are well made. The nylon construction is thick and appears to be strong and they took the extra step of installing metal drive inserts for the ratchet or breaker bar.

If you got them for $20 and $7 shipping then you got a great deal.

I just use a large Channellock plier to remove them then hand tighten a new filter in.

I have quite a few oil filter cup sockets, they've always worked perfectly for me. For a lot of engines they're the only tool you can use for the filter or filter housing. Never used a plastic one though, mine are all stamped steel or cast ally.

I use an AST many times a day at a Toyota dealer. I've had the same one for 4 years now, they work great. The smaller AST will work on f1 and f2 oil filters like your yaris uses as well as all of the housings for the more current oil filters.

My advice is to always use a socket on the cast nut, if you put a ratchet in the drive hole of any brand aluminum tool it will split it in half over time.

I've got a set of HF aluminum. I needed them for a Ford F150 5.4 filter. None of the other sizes fit what I have left for cars. So I have a set that sees no use. I do have some stamped steel ones that fit my other cars. I prefer them to strap wrenches by far.

I bought the one Marco sells and it slips on Camry 2AZ-FE's, I emded up buying the chromed steel model sold at Toyota parts dept., it wasn't cheap, IMO $54, but it works perfectly.

Yup, and filters that are very large...I've got a MAC version of that I've had to use for occasions just as you mentioned.

In terms of the OP...I have no experience with the PROTO ones, but looking at the pic they look to be composite. I've sworn off of the composite ones cause they always seem to slip, and they also try to make them too "Generic" fitting meaning multiple sizes/styles in one cup.

My favorites have been some which I found on eBay...they all over eBay actually, cheap too. Think I paid 7 or 8 bucks shipped from Hong Kong...DieCast construction. Just need to do a little Google-Fu to find out what size & flute you need..
