Yea, the other ones are out there, too. How's the spin flex?

I have that same set and LOVE them!! I also have the spinflex in 1/4 drive and really like it.

While doing some shopping and comparing, I noticed that MAC sold or sells the same ones for quite a bit more.

The only thing that I have found, was that when you first start using them is that they will tend to "lock up" until they are worn in and worked with.

My issue with the proto ratchets is the head is so big. They do feel really smooth though. Also, I kind of dont understand ratchets that have screwdriver handles. Snappy, max, proto all have made them at one time or another. You dont hold a ratchet the same way you hold a screwdriver, so why are there ratchets with what is essentialy a screwdriver handle? I guess if it feels right in you hand, thats all that matters.

Sometimes you need a good grip on handle.

I was trying to break loose the bolts on a throttle body. I couldn't get a socket in there, so I had to use 1/4" drive. My 1/4" drive handle is whimpy and I could not get a good grip on the handle to apply enough torque. The comfort handle would have helped here.

They're not really got tight spaces as you've noted, but they (should be) great on nuts/bolts where you need decent torque and you don't want your hand slipping off the handle.

If they were my only ratchet I would say no thanks due to the space the handle takes up when working tight. However I would love to have one of each of those for when working in unrestricted areas. I am still a big Proto fan

Are you thinking these are the old proto ratchet's? they are not. These are either going to be the 45 tooth model or the 30 tooth. Mac offer's version's of both.

I was just going off the ebay ad which says 24 tooth. I guess they could be wrong (I hope).

I have the big dog proto's and like them.

However, I picked up the 1/4 Precision Ratchet with 72 Teeth-5 degree indexing. And I like it better than the big dog one!

Nice small heads and nice smooth action that is crisp and does not reverse direction accidentily because the flip lever is harder to accidentily hit and reverse.

Now I need to pick up some of the larger ones! This Proto stuff is addicting. :D

Can anyone get a closer shot of these ratchets? The ebay shots are too far away

i have that set, and to give you an idea, the 1/2 head is smaller than a quarter.

I have that Precision series set as well. The action is very smooth with very little back drag and the heads are very small in diameter. The heads are fairly thin but really not any slimmer thickness wise than many standard ratchets. The finish quality is fine, but not the jewel-like finish that a lot of Proto stuff has. Made in Taiwan but I guess I can't complain since I got the three piece set for $17.50. I like them but can't comment on strength or durability. I really have not used them much. I tend to lean on the old favorites.

Something was up with the 1/4" ratchet. I took a closer look and it looked like the head was not tightened enough. I took a hex key and was able to somewhat tighten the one side, still not enough. Then I tried the other side and it had already been stripped. Now I know why it wasn't tightened from the factory...

Anyway I wrote back to the seller and she said:

"It has a lifetime warranty thru Stanley Proto. You can send it to them for a replacement or you can send it back to me and I can send you another. Which ever is convenient for you. Just let me know."

I thought these were discontinued? Lifetime warranty? Damn. I will be buying more Proto soon if so...

The heads on these look identical to the soft-grip black-chrome 1/2" drive Husky I have at home. Snap-ring looking reverse lever and all.

There has been tons of Proto stuff on liquidation.com recently. I assume that's where the ebay tools came from. I wish I could afford to get in on some of those deals.

How does the comfort grips hold up when exposed to grease and solvents??

I haven't cleaned them yet. They look they would take it no problem since they are harder than the Snap-ons. Not spoungy.

They are the same as the mac ratchet handles, hard plastic screwdriver handles. :)
