I have a mac version I picked up at a pawn shop; it was sheared off (broken) right at the head swivel point. Are these inherently weak ratchets? I need to send mine in for warranty replacement.

Thanks wrenchr. I just picked one of those up. Mac tools website has it for like $110 . so $30 doesn't seem like a bad investment.:)

I recently picked up a new 1/4" drive Spinflex for 20 bucks. I really like it except that the ratchet action is on the stiff side. It has high "reverse stroke torque" to use the term tool industry insider reversegear used in another thread. I hope it lightens up with use. I will do anything to avoid using an air ratchet. I tried a bunch of them at a flea market after I got mine and they were all the same stiffness as my Spinflex. I guess it does not matter much in situations where you know you can use the spin feature but It will have to improve a lot before it becomes the first ratchet I grab.

Just for general information: These spin flex ratchets are currently on close out at Grainger for the same $22 price. Elroy's local branch has (3) in stock.

what does it do? the handle spins?

The screwdriver style handle can be set to spin freely or be fixed. With it in the spin configuration you can flex the ratchet straight and spin fasteners fast like with a speeder handle. With the handle fixed, it is just a regular flex head ratchet.

Is this a weak, failure prone design? As mentioned earlier my used Mac version is broken; any comments or experiences? Inquiring minds want to know!

Mine seems pretty stout, although I have not used it for very long.

How is the ratchet action on yours? I ask since yours is really "broken in"

I bought it literally "broken"; in this case the ratchet head is gone! All I have is the handle and a little bit of the swivel portion stuck in the pin. Because of this, I have no clue! This is in my pile of Mac tools that I need to send in for warranty replacement; we have not had a Mac dealer in my area for a very, very, long time!
