Ok, I need some expert opinions, I've really been looking at new boxes and found a guy selling Proto boxes for a steal ($600). He's selling this one:

What do you guys think of this box? I'm going to be using it at home, so it won't see heavy use, but I want a pretty good box either way. Do you guys think it would work out? I'm also not looking to fill up my tool box with blow molded cases, after all that's what shelves are for!

That sounds like an amazing price! Does he have more than one? :D

Edit: This is based on prices I've seen from Grainger for proto boxes. I may be way off base.

He had a few, all new. I'm going to call tomorrow and make sure they're still available.

Protos are good boxes. They won't make you the cool kid at the dealership, but they'll survive a lifetime in an industrial environment. That's a killer price on one, if it's available you'd better jump on it.

Proto makes good boxes; wish I had one like that at home.
I'd wonder at that price for a brand new box though. Unless the prices I'm looking at are way out of line, 600 bucks sounds like some sort of scam. If it turns out to be legit I'd jump all over it, though

Edit: I stand corrected, according to the internet that particular box is a little less expensive than I had thought. Sounds like a decent price.

I saw one once in person in a store and it seemed just OK not great but not bad. The metal isn't nearly as thick as it is on a Snap on KRL or something like that. I would put it in the same league as the harbor freight boxes. I own some of the HF boxes and like them. $600 seems like a fair price to me.

It's a local industrial supply house, that seems to be clearancing them out. I can stop into the shop without any issues. I'm always skeptical of pricing, but I guess it's worth a shot.

In that case it sounds like a pretty good buy. I've just seen a number of things for sale locally in the last few months that scream "craigslist scam" to me and it's made me wary of anything that sounds too cheap.

I saw a couple of them in the shop. They are made in Canada (the ones I saw) and are a step above HF 42 quality.

That sure looks like this $1600 box from Grainger. Even accounting for Grainger's prices, it seems like a steal: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/PROTO-Rolling-Workstation-5RRG1?Pid=search

Sears shows it for $1370 and I saw it as low as $1100. Only 18 inches deep though. If the quality seems good in person, sounds good. Grainger lists COO as USA for whatever that is worth. I like the HF chests (own the 41"), but even if the quality is the same, I would spend an extra hundred or two to get something made in N. America.

I guess I'm the contrarian here, but $600 for that box doesn't blow my doors off. Looks like a decent box and all, but I've seen better deals for that kind of money on Craigslist. Not saying you shouldn't get it if you're happy with it...just doesn't look like the type of "you ****" deal that the rest of you guys think it is. But hey, just my $0.02. :)
