Proto tool box review

Pic heavy review on my new Proto 450 series box

200 lb capacity drawer slides with adjustable detents. The detents take some getting used to as there's a second set on drawer extension. The second set kicks when you get to the second stage slides but only if you closed the drawer past the first detent. If you don't push past the detent when you close the drawer the second set never clicks (Not noticeable if you have weight in the drawer anyway). Most of the time I leave about half my drawers unlatched so I can open the drawer, grab the tool I need, and close the drawer without ever stopping as I walk by the box.

Drawers open a bit stiff until you load them up (Top drawer is single finger open and closed with weight in it) but a shot of silicone spray in the slides helps the lighter drawers roll a little easier. Single slides on all the drawers but they are pre-cut for extra slides if one wanted to add slides to the top extra wide and bottom wide drawer. Looks like one could reconfigure the drawer layout also as the box is punched for slides all the way up.

Drawers are 16 ga steel and have rolled lips. Feel quite steady with weight in them. Drawer liners are pre-cut and top notch

The top mat is thin but very heavy and lays flat. Wipes off with a rag too.

Box shell :dunno:

The handle bolts on either side and feels sturdy.

Casters roll almost too easily and are very quiet. Lock the wheels before you walk away or your box may exit stage left...

The frame is 14 ga and looks like you could add a third set of casters.

Overall quite happy with the box for $2800. Only problem I had was a slide on one of the drawers wasn't fully seated so the drawer didn't want to close right until I pulled it out and looked at it. Reached behind the drawer and clicked the second stage of the slide in and all is well  I actually quite like the drawer pulls also. Wasn't sure I would but they're sweet...

Looks like a very nice box, good drawer layout. Has anyone asked you what Proto stands for yet? Out of curiosity what would an "equivalent" truck brand box run compared to the Proto?

The "equivalent" MAC is North of 8K...

Z knows:thumbup:
but if you don't PROTO is short for PROfessional TOols.
your using a starrett vernier caliper to measure the gauge of the metal, so I think you know a bit about quality tools:beer:

I was somewhat kinda joking. I've ran into a good number of pro mechanics that have never heard of Proto, SK, Armstrong or the like. Regarded these as off brands. I was just curious if anyone had asked him about the Proto name since it isn't as common in boxes as one of the truck brands.

I bet you a dollar it's made at the MAC facility in Georgetown Ohio.

Really, is that who makes them?

I didn't even know they made boxes still let alone that big. That's a nice looking box and assembled in the US as well. Good luck with it.

Proto makes them but chances are pretty good they come from the same factory and share parts as they are both Stanley companies. I would wager the MAC MB1850 is it's twin...

MAC 57" x 25" 620 lbs, 200 lb slides with adjustable detents

Proto 57" x 25" 625 lbs, 200 lb slides with adjustable detents, same styling as older MAC boxes (Drawer pulls in center)

Our Paccar engine tech asked me about it. He remembered when Proto used to be carried by hardware stores but didn't know they were still around or made boxes. I think Proto would do well if more people knew they even existed.

Very nice setup. I just picked up the smaller Proto 7 drawer roller cabinet for work. Very good quality for the $$. Proto is very underrated in my opinion.

I just notices, yours has different slides than mine and my top drawer isn't punched for a 2nd set. Just an older production model I suppose.

That's odd... But my mine was made to order so it's possible they've changed the slides since you got yours :dunno:

He's not kidding. If I don't lock casters on mine and I pull on the left side of a drawer, the box tries to roll over me

This is true ^^^ and if you walk away from the box it isn't always where you left it if you don't lock them.

Did some work tonight. Ground out the 1/4" steel plate for a brushed look and bolted it down to the box with the new vise. Added two counter-**** machine screws in the center of the plate to help keep it from moving.

Man $2800 you should have bought 3 of the HF 56" boxes and the 5 drawer cart. I have played with it at the store and my buddy has one. It is just as good as snap on. Just kidding. Getting it out of the way because it doesn't matter what the tool box thread is about someone will chime in with that gem.

umm... does that mean you drilled holes into the top of the box?

Yeah :dunno: 4 bolts through the vise and two counter **** in the center. Vise wouldn't do much good if it wasn't bolted down...
