My guesses are fairly basic and probably too simple to be true but could range from JPD not having part numbers assigned by Proto so they simply didn't stamp them. As far as why JPD wasn't making pliers even though they had already bee acquired, maybe their contract with Utica had not been fulfilled and they saw no reason to have JPD do production on items already guaranteed in a contract with Utica.
If you need one Pepsi and you have a Pepsi in your hand, why tell your friend to go get you another Pepsi?

I am definitely not even near as well schooled as you are in this stuff lugs, I feel most of my thoughts aren't in your ballpark but I figured I'd give it a shot lol

I bought an adapter from 3/4" to 1" a month back and was a little irritated knowing I'd never use it. Well although I think I overpaid, I made up for that frustration at the swap and found something I definitely will use: A 1/2" to 3/4" adapter.

A fastener supply shop(local family owned) that I use also ended up being a Proto dealer and has 6-8 new-age Proto tool boards and even has a NOS wooden screwdriver still in it's plastic.
anyways, they use the same socket, new, in plain steel to hold their "Will Call" door open. Always thought that was amusing.

No not really! I was just showing the lack of prep work before being sprayed with paint. I think a kid may have done it based on the odd color assortment and lack of complete work. I really hope it can be cleaned off to show the olive green wrinkle finish inside

Damn that *****, because this:

Found the Proto box and Proto 5449 today. Got eh Plomb last week(bad deal, but I had been looking for a 1/2" plomb ratchet in the wild with no luck for 5 years--odd seeing how common they are...)

Man that is horrible [emoji849] why can’t someone just leave well enough alone?

Man I am with you all the way, there. I was thinking the same thing. It is also the second Proto box this year that was cool and the seller said, "ohhhh....wait....what do you mean it's missing a tray? ...Well, I left it at home. Same price."

And yes admittedly it is one of the worse "lipstick on a pig's" I've ever seen. At least it was only $7 :dunno:

Bonus: It's pretty rough inside and the top doesn't close well without some finagling.:sad:

I put half a quart of paint stripper on it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PCVKLK/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I am very happy with the results, this box is in exactly the condition I like them in.
You can still see small amounts of the new paint to compare; the original paint was very faded and worn, zero paint on bottom. this thing was used

I found this Proto LA MFD 1730 obstruction wrench at the flea market yesterday. It's #17 (no dupes) and one of the more shallower starter/manifold wrench designs in my half-moon collection.

Much better. The sad thing (?) is that most people don't really care if it is painted, or rusty for that matter. They either want a working tool box, cheap preferably, and could care less about the history of it. Or, they want the rusty look to plant flowers in it or somesuch.

This week, along with a bunch of other Proto and Plomb stuff, I got this LA 1/2 drive socket set, LA 240 pliers, a 4” adjustable, and a very thin mfd USA wrench that is for hydraulic pump service(?). The logo on the box is pretty rough but at least no one tried to paint it.

Nice find in the drive set in the carry box! Not super easy to find and looks fairly well taken care of

I picked up a bunch of Challenger by Proto and Proto sockets today. The chrome plated ones are in the evaporust but I cleaned these up.

Picked up this 3/8" drive set yesterday. Not sure what the set # is but appears to be missing the flex handle. All the pieces show little to no use.

I took yesterday’s rusty sockets out of the evaporust. The ones in the toolbox tray are too rusted to save, the others are worth keeping.
