I have a Proto No, 4749 1/4" drive ratchet that is missing the directional selection lever. Does anyone know if Proto will fix/replace/send parts?

Somewhere, but I was dealing with Canadian HQ in Oakville, ON so it likely wouldn't be of help to you... Maybe someone else has the US info?

If you have a Grainger nearby they will send them in for warranty. I replaced a couple punches a few months ago through my local Grainger. Mike.

Just call them up from the number on the website and they will send you a kit for free, that is what I have done in the past.

Sounds like you're a regular at their counter. Walk in off the street and try that and you likely to find their service to be less than satisfactory. Grainger has some weird policies and you need to be prepared with the facts of Proto's warranty before approaching them.

There are threads on Proto warranty. I've warrantied a Challenger ratchet, hex sockets, punches, and a snap ring pliers. I'd suggest sending the tool to their place in GA with a note.

1) warranty address is:

Proto Tools
2195 East View Parkway
Suite 103
Conyers, GA 30013

or 2) www.stanleyproto.com

send a message, and they will give you authorization or just send out a rebuild kit.

Hope that helps

That depends on how you talk to them on the phone.

Some guys have no phone skills what-so-ever.

Proto female rep "hello Proto tools"

Merk. "hi dear, I have a broken tool in my hand"

Proto "how can I help you"

Merk. "I tried the red lube of love, but my tool still does not engage properly"

Proto "what?"

Merk. "I use it on my Snap-on tool, and it works best in Cornwell's, but"

Proto "dial tone"

In the office, "you can't believe what this guy was saying to me":shocking:

:lol_hitti

Couldn't help it, it is what I imagined LOL

I e mailed them about repair kits for my big dawg 1/2" and 3/8".
They asked for my name and address, and I had repair kits in my mailbox within a few days free of charge.

Hmm...what about the Challenger line? Are those covered, too? Because, I have a neat little dainty old 1/4 Challenger ratchet that needs a gut kit.

Anyone know about the Challenger line, if it's covered?

Also, let me ask about ethics. If I buy a ratchet from eBay and it needs a kit, is it ethical for me to try to get one for free from Stanley? Because, if it is, I should have done that last month when I had two old Protos that needed kits. I just ended up selling them for $5 each instead!

Not being a smartass here my friend, but we've covered this topic before, and I can tell you that it's fairly controversial. You'll hear arguments for both sides.

With this said, I have personally received a couple of free kits for ratchets that I have bought used at pawn shops/flea markets. It's not something I do every day , but I have done it.

To be honest, I have not seen or been involved in any previous threads that there might be about this subject. I'm on here a lot, but I can't read everything!

I hear ya' man. Some days I just skim through the threads. I wasn't so much complaining as I was giving you a heads up that it is a can of worms. :)

Sorry I wasn't clear - I was in a hurry as usual

My policy is to write a letter with full disclosure. I've got guys who work at the shop who've abused a particular tool. I'll disclose that, and ask for the warranty. I've mentioned that my dad picked such and such a tool at the swap meet, it had a good life and then it broke. I include a photo of a product that I make or assemble with a particular tool and tell them how useful the tool has been. Sometimes I make the letter humorous. So far, I'm about 10 for 10 with warranty. About 6 have failed through normal use, or what I'd consider to be as such, and the rest probably idiots (including myself with my proto punches) breaking them, and I've always gotten a new or repaired item in the mail. My Proto wrench I paid to have recalibrated, but a part that was broken was replaced free of charge.

I just used their online form. I hope that was the right way to go.

The guys that had luck, what did you use?

I called them up and got kits sent to my house. If the tools was broken and a kit wouldn't work, just send the tool back and in a couple of weeks a new tool will appear in the mail.

your never going to see your tools again

lol...

Unless they're gonna come to my house and take my ratchets, I'll still have them. :)

I was trying to get some repair kits from them for my Big Dawgs, not send something in.

I used the online form also. Requested a rebuild kit for a ratchet on a saturday, received an email response on monday saying they would send one out. The kit came in the mail later that week. Quick and painless:thumbup:

In my experience, going to Grainger has been pointless. They wouldn't warranty the ratchet unless I could prove I bought it there. I ended up buying a kit through them because I had always thought you had to send the whole tool in to Proto. That was before I learned that they would send one out for free.

the actual big dawg ratchet has a p at he end of the number. examples- 4749p, 5249p, 5449p. standard length 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch ratchets with knurled grip. i called proto a short time ago (after january 1st). they informed me that they no longer offered support for the big dawgs. grainger seems to agreee as 1/2 rebuild kits are on clearanace. all sizes are in short supply through grainger and say they will no longer be available when stock is gone. i stocked up for myself and a few others just in case. i have more than i will ever need but i still have less than the cost of one of the hard to find models invested. if you think you will ever need a kit you better put one on the shelf. as a side note my local grainger said they would not warranty any proto tool in store more than a year after purchase. just reporting what i was told.

I had requested a rebuild kit from Proto for my 5449 around xmas time. They sent it to me and I could not get the selector lever to stay on.
Called them up again, sent it in, about a week and a half later, I received a new one.

I need to pick up some of these then. Is this the correct item for the 1/2 5549p ratchets? http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/pa...log/N-98aZ1z13o1f/Ntt-proto?op=search&sst=All

Thanks.

I had a thread about my problems with Proto and Grainger in the past so I won't get into it again but suffice it to say my experience wasn't good. The final outcome came about last week when I had a formal hearing with my companies HR department and I ended up being disciplined for my interactions with the local Grainger.I can't say too much but suffice to say filling out their customer service survey online can lead to repercussions at work.

that ***** to be you on this issue. i really don't do a lot with grainger. i just happen to belong to an organization that has wrangled a decent discount with them. i only go there for the odd things i can't source easily elsewhere. the majority of my purchases have actually beeen stuff they had on closeout. when they decide to get rid of it they throw a hell of a deal. other than that there multi-tiered pricing *****. everybody has adifferant price on everything.

Well that *****, not knowing all of the specifics its hard to determine what could of been done better but obviously someone at Grainger pushed you to a point of sharing your opinion and they obviously don't like your opinion. I've dealt with Grainger for over 30 years and some guys there will bend over backwards and others are worthless. The best was when I worked at one place and Grainger's was right next door and our radios and their's were on the same frequency, so we would call their warehouse guys and ask if items were in stock.

I could understand your company talking to you but disciplining you I think is pushing it and shows that their concern for your tools in helping them to keep running/doing their business is not a priority they can understand.

i actually have some experience with proto customer service. I got a 45 tooth 1/2in drive ratchet from work, it had broken and they were gonna throw it away. It was a 5449P i think, its been awhile. Any way, i called the service center and I was told my 5449P would be replaced with a 5449. After checking the web site and noticing the 5449 was only 24 tooth I called them back and the lady on the phone said that if i sent a note with the ratchet i would get a comparable replacement. I sent it out and 2 weeks later I got back a 24 tooth ratchet. I figured that eh, it was free, so what ever I got i would be happy with. About 2 weeks later I was talking to my MSC rep at work and we got on the subject of proto customer service. I told him all about what had happened and that was about it. I didnt think anything about it but later that week a proto rep called me at work, he asked me what had happened. I told him everything, even the fact that the 5449P was broken and I pretty much dug it out of the trash. He said someone would contact me in the next day or so. I thought that I would never hear from them again. The next day a lady called and asked for my address. She said she was gonna send me a comparable unit to the one I sent in originally. I asked her what she wanted me to do with the 24 tooth 5449, she said not to worry about it. 2 weeks later a 5449XL showed up in the mail. I was stunned, its so much nicer than the first ratchet. I called my MSC rep and asked him what he did and he replied "my job".
