Anyone warrantied anything with proto recently? I have a c-clamp and a co-worker has a pair of pliers to send back. They used to have an address listed on their webpage to send items to. I sent in a couple items a couple years ago with no problems. Now the website reads "Distributors of record must act as a return agent." Does this mean I will have to drive more than an hour to a proto retailer?

I sent a socket to them last summer and they mailed me a new "Blackhawk" back. I mailed them a Challenger that was busted. Good enough for me.

Call up your local grainger, they might just send you replacements. I've had pretty good luck with grainger, I know it can be a hit and miss for some folks, but they have done good by me.

Same here; it was a very fair exchange and good service.

I sent two emails about a flex-head with a broken pivot and never got a reply. It now collects dust...

I like their sockets a lot, but I can't find much reason to buy much else from them.

:dunno:

Isn't it just like the stanley warranty (you mail it in and judge dredd judges whether or not you abused it) because um...

If I broke tools I probably still wouldn't know because I don't really buy a lot of stanley. If I break it it's cheap enough that I wouldn't spend the money on shipping and just buy a replacement for cheaper than shipping.

Yes, sadly all part of Stanley Proto, Blackhawk, and Mac. I have actually had pretty decent luck with sending stuff in to Mac even stuff that was worn out or abused they have replaced in the past. I haven't sent anything in about three years but today I sent a small box to proto and a large box to Mac and I am hoping for the best. The only really bad luck I have had is when they replaced some 3/4 drive Mac sockets with Grey Pneumatic which are decent sockets but are nowhere near the cost of Mac.

Glad they helped you. They basically to me told go jump in a lake. I have a bunch of Challenger stuff. I'm definitely not buying anything else from them.

I had a Proto tool warrantied once. Took it to a distributor and they sent it in. It was not Grainger though. Had the new part in a week or two but had to go pick it up from the distributor. They won't send to a home address.
Grainger was useless for me. I walked in there once looking to buy something I needed with cash. The counter guy said I did not have an account so I was allowed just one purchase and it had to be under $100. One of the most ridiculous things I ever heard so I walked out.
If he said the purchase had to be over $100 I would have walked out too. Glad they wanted my business.

Grainger doesnt make money off you. they make money off wholesale rip offs of military, government and big stealerships and any other bulk customers.

Call them, don't email them. I've warrantied a couple items without issue.

You aren't going to send in a bucket of old Challenger you scraped up at flea markets and auctions in and get a bucket of new **** back, but if you warranty occasionally and it's legit, you won't have any issues.

Just call them (800)800-TOOL.

My Dad, who retired as a mechanic for one of the local village DPWs, used to buy Proto from Grainger. He has a long handle round head Proto ratchet where the chrome peeled so bad it had sharp edges on it. I called Proto, sent it in and they replaced it IMMEDIATELY!

He also has a 1/2" drive Big Dawg that needs a screw..........but they do not have parts for them anymore. They wanted that ratchet back in a bad way......but I didn't sent it in. Eventually, I'll find the screw. Damn thing still works great........when we disassembled it to clean the years of what-not out, one screw rolled all the way to Brazil.

I called them last fall to get a rebuild kit for my 3/8 and 1/2 inch Proto ratchets. At first the nice lady on the phone sounded rather unfamiliar with terms like, "ratchet" and "rebuild kit" and "warranty". Then after very politely explaining to her again, she sounded like she was reading from the rebuild parts list for the first time. "Oh yes, I see them, they're available." I dont know if she was new or just inept.

About a week later, they were in my mailbox.

Somewhere there is a land where AWOL ratchet parts and socks live in harmony. I hope to find it before I die.

The Big Dawgs were great. It's too bad they're no longer supported. My 5 piece set sits in a drawer for this reason. Last time I looked they still had the torque wrench kits available. I imagine the screws may be the same.

I looked a few months ago and did find a torque wrench repair kit......but it was a Canadian company and the shipping cost was......well.......I didn't buy it.

I sent them a few Proto and Blackhawk items (about 10 I think) a couple weeks ago. They sent me back my replacements in about a week. Call them at 800-800-TOOL and they will get you fixed up. As much as I hate to give Stanley credit for anything they did a great job of taking care of my warranty.

+1 on the 800-800-TOOL. The first time I warrantied a Blackhawk socket, I went to Grainger. The counter guy said that I had to return it to the original seller. I told him that was 30 years ago and 400 miles away. He begrudgingly made the exchange. Since then, the folks at 800-800-TOOL have been very nice and extremely helpful the few times that I have needed something.
