Proto tools are awesome. I would say a good 70% of my hand tools are Proto from the '70's, and they are my go-to for toughness and ease of use. You won't be disappointed.

+1

Proto its best.High recomendeted,High quality, all tools

I've got a 5450 that I beat the hell out of and have never had a problem with it.

I did buy a 5450XL (the 45 tooth variant) and it was VERY well made, but it didn't do very well in the dirt and dust my stuff gets subjected to every day. I was taking it apart and cleaning it every couple of days.

I have finally gotten 1/4 through 3/4 Proto ratchets. Good tough equipment. The 1/4 and 3/4 are particularly nice. The only objection to the 1/2 inch one is that socket are hard to get off. Using a screwdriver to pry sockets off is not my thing. I had a older,
well used but smooth working 1/2 inch. After I got the almost new 3/4 I wanted a nicer looking 1/2 inch and had seen one at the local pawn shop. Got it very reasonable, looks good, action tight, but sockets are hard to get off it also. Not sure what to do. I would get a new kit if I thought it would help.

I like Proto, however having to warranty a new USA ratcheting spline wrench it seems. Locked up today. 10mm. Haven't had much use. Not sure if I'll have to go through Grainger or Proto though.

I confirm that the design has not changed and parts are interchangeable from the old Plomb to the new Proto's. I found a $2 dollar 1/4 at the pawn shop and put the gut in my grandfathers Plomb. I the got the rebuild kit for the 3/8 mini and put it the 1/4 body for a thin profile stubby 3/8". As for lube I used assembly lube. Seems to work okay.
