I just got the pair of 3/8" Proto Big Dawgs in the mail yesterday, and as it turns out, FedEx also delivered my digital SLR back from the repair center - and THAT'S another story... sigh - anyway, I tried it out snapping a couple pics of the Protos.

Not my favorite ratchets, exactly - I really DO like my SO ratchets better :headscrat But being a Proto fan from way back I just wanted them.

Those are great pictures, look professional. What year are those ratchets from? I have some of the large head ones that I got back in the eighties, not quite as fancy as the ones you have. Here's a picture of my 3/8" (I was going to put an arrow but I suppose many of you here could name all the ratchets without seeing the names):

Not a clue Mickey except that they're from within the last few years. I've got a few of the old style Protos like you picture too, they're good ratchets but the head's so dang huge...

i am not positive but i would say it was more than a than a couple of years ago. they must have had 10's of thousands of them stockpiled though as they keep showing up. those two and the 1/4 and 1/2 show up the most along with the long handle black1/2. plastic handle versions of 3/8 are also seen on occasion. supposedly there were also 3/8 and 1/2 flex heads also. i saw them in some literature but doubt many were made and have never seen one. i have six big dawgs in my stable. my favorites are the plastic handle.

Yeah, you'll never miss a Proto in a drawer full of ratchets, possibly one of the easiest ratchets to identify from almost any angle.

I have that exact same set on the way, plus trying to get the 1/4"...how many teeth, 54? 52? (they do look purty huh?)

As for the old style and still current style the basic 5449 is old as the hils and they make new styles discontinue them, but they always have the 5449's, why is that, because they are damn workhorses, yes low tooth count, and head as big as my stomach, but where access isn't an issue they are a beast, I still have an old 5449 long handle bought it new at acklands for $15(Canada) um 22 years ago, that thing has seen many a pipe or wrench on it, never changed the assembly yet, chrome is faded due to work conditions, few dings in my knurling, even some john deere green paint on it(had paint my tools stage) but thats character:)

Those pics are a lot better than my old Canon 20d, maybe time to stop buying tools and look at replacing my camera.

I'm reasonably happy with the Canon, despite having to send it in and get it repaired under warranty. But I tell ya, it's not like that's L-series glass or anything, that's just the cheap 18-55 kit lens it came with. I'd like to have a 100mm macro lens for it, but the currency values right now with Japan have made lenses increase almost 50% in the last year.

I have a 28-105 ultra sonic lens and the cheap 18-55 non-USM lens, and a 75-300 USM lens and the last one was a 55-200 USM, but the best bang for the buck I got was the 28-105 USM that came with my A2e, nice camera and nice lens and it all works on my 20d which is an old 8.2 mp camera I got in 2004, still works fine, but just older now...

Proto Big Dawgs belong in a museum of design. Since discovering them here on GJ I've bought 3/8 and 1/2 drive BDs, standard length in chrome and long handle in oxide.
