PROXXON rotary tool VS METABO die grinder

Hello, maybe someone can advice on which tool would be better for:

1) cutting a 10mm rusted nut without damaging everything around it;

2) making small cuts in sheet steel up to 1 mm.

I was thinking about:

Proxxon IBS/E

Do you know if it can cut or grind steel plates of this thickness?

Metabo GE 950 G Plus

May be this would be more versatile tool overall, with low RPM setting it can also be used with metal brushes. But I am not sure about the cutting disc diameter, I wonder if there is an adapter for smaller cutting discs with thinner shaft (like for dremel tools)?

Or maybe these tasks require 2 different tools, what do you guys think?

Maybe you have already tried this, but PB Blaster and some heat (if you can heat without harming paint rubber whatever is close to the nuts--is that an appliance? Washer/Dryer?

Whatever gives good access that you can control. If you really want to minimize damage you might be able to drill a series of very small holes in the but. Put a vice grips on it and it may sort of twist off/fall apart

Looks like it's an auto sunroof. I agree with Glemon to try PB Blaster or something to penetrate the rust and break it loose. I personally use Kroil oil and let it soak for a couple of days. Less damage and work if you can get them loose chemically.

That said, I have the Proxxon tool and love it. It's like a Dremel on steroids, and has chucks to use all of the Dremel tools. Might use up a few disks cutting to the stud, you want to cut it down to the start of the threads and then use a chisel to break the nut apart. Might have to use a steel drill to get the last little bit of the nut next to the panel in order to keep from cutting/damaging the panel.

Good luck, I hope the penetrating oil solutions work for you first.

Hi Gkemon and OldShadowGuy, thank you for the advice! It is an auto sunroof. The metal on the sunroof has corroded, so I'll have to find a one in better shape or made out of glass and replace it ant those nuts might be a problem. Of course, if those nuts do not unscrew, the first thing to try would be some chemical solution.

But still, I might have some other uses for a rotary tool with cutting disc, for places there an angle grinder with 125mm disc is a bit too big. And cant decide which of these tools would be better.

Maybe dumb question. How do you get pb blaster to penetrate upwards, against gravity.

As for a Metabo die grinder, the compact variable speed one is awesome !! A wide assortment of bits available and using a wire wheel at slow speeds extends wire life.
Teresa are a variety of cutting wheels available.
A Dremel brand is what I use. I gave a few and the variable speed is a must. The have smaller diameter cutting wheels. They work fine but for what I do don't last long.
The tool saves the day for tight quarters work.
Both tools have their places so I bought both.
Dremel is definitely light duty where as the METABO will go on forever.
I also have 4 METABO 4 1/2 "- 5" grinders.
My first is 30 years old and still going.

If you have sufficient access I'd use a nut buster. Hard to tell from the photo. Otherwise, as previously mentioned, drill small holes in a line across the nut on both sides. Chemicals will not free a rusted nut no matter how long you wait. Rust locking is a physical interference. You have to break that crystal lock before the lubricant can help.

Drill it?
Just regular HSS drill bit is what i would try first. Cobalt if you have them.
So once you have castrated your sunroof ...? :shocking:

Hi BD1, have you ever tried using smaller accessories on a Metabo die grinder, like in this video?

Wow, thanks that is slick. I never saw that before. I did read that a reducer is available from 1/4 to 1/8.
The Dremel collet idea is perfect. I'll have to try that, thanks .

I'll have to try that, thanks .

I really do not know if this is safe, I guess a small disc on a bigger grinder can shatter and target someones eye :)

I hoped someone had experience with this setup and can share their opinion. But if this is not a common combination, maybe it is not the best idea. So anyway please be cearful!

Thanks, Yes I agree. It's a good idea but user needs common sense when using.
My Compact METABO is variable speed and those 1/8 shanks are not designed for real use. Dremel tools and accessories are fine but I feel they are for craft work.
