The key isn't the length of pry bar but, where you pry. On a side note, we don't mess with the lower ball joint. We separate the outer tie rod end, remove rotor, caliper, and cross over bracket, axle nut and two lower strut bolts after marking everything with a paint pen. The lower ball joit is easily damaged from prying, beating or separating., Alot of GM knuckles are aluminium and don't take kindly to hammering. You can then easily separate the outer axle shaft from the knuckle and then pop the inboard joint out. I would also recommend replacing the axle seals if they're seeping before putting new halfshafts in. We've had great experience with Napa axles both new and rebuilt. Carquest and Autozone have logged repeated failures in our shop and are never again used.
