I'm posting a link to new program developed by the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA). BHMA was formed in 1927 to represent door hardware manufacturers in North America. Until 3 years ago, BHMA's sole focus was for commercial/industrial locks and hardware.

BHMA writes ANSI/BHMA standards for their industry, and has recently written 2 new standards for residential locksets and deadbolts, similar to existing standards for industrial and commercial locks. Most of the US based lock manufacturers, and quite a few foreign companies, have agreed to the A-B-C ratings for Security, Durability and Finish. Manufacturers submit their products to independent 3rd party testing labs (like UL & ITS) where the locks are tested, graded and certified to the ANSI/BHMA requirements.

We have been working with big box stores (HD, Lowes, ...) to ensure there are point of sale displays showing the new scheme. We've also been working with the insurance industry, as well as local police associations.

Soon (maybe December/January) you will begin to see fresh inventory with packaging noting the gradings in the standardized format on the secure home website.

www.securehome.org

Transparency: I work for ASSA ABLOY (one of 80+ BHMA members), and also serve on BHMA's Board of Directors and Executive Committee.

 Grading of the door hardware is a great idea. When opening, closing and locking a door the feeling of security varies quite a bit. Having this grading will help me make decisions when deciding to change out my hardware.
Thanks, Kip

We've worked on this a long time; now if we could only figure out how to buy a new mattress;)
