I would like to seal my PT pool deck before it gets too cold out

I do not want a stain but rather a clear seal

Recommendations?

Also, can it be sprayed on or should it be brushed and/or rolled on?

I prefer to use a penetrating oil based product and reapply every 2 years. I have used Cabot Austrailan Timber Oil (Menards) and also Sikkens SRD(Pittsburg/PPG) with good results.

The reapplication process is simple. Sweep, wash with a hose and deck brush only if neccessary, let dry for several days and reapply with a good quality stain brush.

I was amazed at the amount of stain this brush can hold:

Look up Ready Seal or Armstrong Clark sealers. Apply with 3/4" roller. What ever you apply if there is a prior sealer that is not the same as the new one on the deck you have to remove it. Strip it with HD 80 or Rippit, neutralize it then seal it when it dry to 12% moisture content.

No stain or sealer currently on the deck.

Just finished building it about 45 days ago

I just sealer my PT trailer deck today with this Flood stuff. Never used it before but a friend recommended it. Took about 1-1/2 gallons for 2 coats on a 6x16 deck. The boards were already a red-brown color so the Cedar tint just make it a deeper color.

Yea FLOOD... I have used it for my parent's deck, smaller one takes about 3 gallons...it held up pretty good since 2015 or something... the tint is nice (I have the Cedar color)... I think will be re-applying it next year after pressure washing it... as far as clear liquid.. not sure if they have it. Thomspson water seal is about the only thing....

Flood is good stuff, lasts longer than thompsons IMO. They make a "natural" which is pretty clear, slight yellowing.

I used it on a cedar project that was in direct sun and it started to get a tiny bit of sun fading after 5 years, re applied and it was like new.

Since just built. You need to clean it with a deck brightener to remove dirt and mold and also any sap that had migrated to the surface during the planer process at the factory. Use the wood bleach to do this. Wash it off and let it dry to 12% moisture content then seal it. I would never recommend Thompson's as it has horrible reviews. Look up the Grime Scene/a board of pros who deal with cleaning and sealing wood structures. See what products they use.

Another vote for Flood and it comes in clear, although Valspar is very good too. From experience, I think Thompson is the worst. There is a reason it's the cheapest.

I rolled on 2 layers of Flood Cedar Tone CWF-UV on the deck I built last May. To get the sealant deep into the pores I sanded the pressure treated wood. I let the wood dry for 12 weeks before sanding.

You can get clear Flood CWF-UV. Home Depot and Ace carry it.

Roll it. Always roll/brush it. Rolling breaks the surface tension and pushes it deeper. Not to mention no overspray problems.

For the price of $20 a gallon.......Flood oil based is hard to beat

I used a two brushes and a roller and did the deck today........a tad over 2 gallons

I am going to roll on another coat on the top boards tomorrow

The wood really soaked it up..........I was not expecting to use 3 gallons but glad I did

With menards rebates the 3 gallons only cost me $12

Cabot Australian timber oil. Expensive, but good stuff. Just thick enough to fill small irregularities. Think a 5 gallon bucket is about 200$. Thompsons is just ****.

For the price it's a great deck sealant. I first used Flood 6 years ago and applied 2 coats. Didn't have to apply another coat until 3 years later.

Since I didn't use a sprayer to get between the tight boards I used Shur-Line pads I got at HD. Just need to cut off it's plastic edge.

Any clear stain isnt going to protect the wood from UV light. One of the two major enemies of wood.

Almost anything you can get at a big box store is going to be junk or your going to have to re apply every 2-3yrs max. You should look at what the log home industry uses as they dont have the luxury of be able to just replace a few boards every 10yrs when the stain fails.

I find it funny that people will spend thousands of dollars on a PT wood deck but dont want to spend $35gal to protect it.

They do the same with house paint. Or if they actually spend $50+ a gallon, they apply it with a $3 brush and $2 roller.
