My patio and my garage share a wall and there are no outlets in the garage on said wall. There IS an outlet on the patio however so I thought I might be able to put an outlet in the garage that chains off of the patio. Is this okay? As in legal/safe/etc. I don't see why not but being the relative rookie that I am I figured I'd ask the dumb question before I start cutting into drywall.

I can't see why you can't do it. I would. Just turn off the breaker and check that there are not too many outlets on that line as is.

The GFCI is upstream from the patio outlet so I shouldn't have to do anything to it.
