Pull these bearings?

The answer might be obvious, but....

How can I get these bearings off?

I need a bearing puller without about 8 inches of reach but I cannot find anything like that. Ideas?

Much easier with a press and one of these

maybe find a local machine shop, should wizz of in 5 minutes, failing that if your carfeul you can get those of with a cutting wheel on a grinder and a chisel

Yeah, I've been meaning to get a press for awhile now, but I don't want to just get the harbor freight one so I'm still saving change. I'll give that vise and pry bar trick a shot and if that doesn't work I'll have at it with a cutoff wheel. Thanks for the help.

I have a 500$ set of pullers but that is a good trick. You can get the HF knockoff puller like the one pictured for about 25$, be great for most home brew jobs, even some ****** work.

You could also support the bearing with a separator in the vise then tap on the end of the shaft using a brass hammer or a brass drift with a regular hammer, that way you won't damage the shaft.

All you have to do is cut outer race off with a cut off wheel then cut across inner race about 75% through and use a chisel in cut. Bearing inner race while split and slide off.

Well, if the shaft that you're trying to pull the bearings off of is small enough, you should be able to snug the bearing separator plate bolts up good, so that the halves of the separator are flat against each other, which will reduce/eliminate the bending of the bolts.

Otherwise, put better bolts in the bearing separator... the cheaper (HF) ones would probably bend if you were trying to pull a really, really stubborn bearing, unless they were tightened all the way.

Obviously, you don't want the separator to be tight against the shaft of whatever you're pulling the bearings off of... that would probably leave some scratches, or worse.

The rod supplied with the pullers is hardened fine threaded rod. I have yet to bend one (and I do abuse them).

Wow, thanks for all the replies guys. I got the bearings off later that day through a combination of prying and chiseling. Since ordered the replacements through vxb.com and got the new ones installed tonight through some strategic strikes against the inner races with a flat face punch. Having a press would've been easier but the job is done now at least. I just need to finish wire wheeling the grinder body, then paint it, and then I can put it back together. Here's a pic of what it is for the curious. It's the one hanging by the chain.
