Been a while planning and wanting a new garage. Finally decided to dust the wallet off and start the process. While not exactly what I was looking for ( open beam barn style) it will serve me well. Putting up a 28 x 42 garage, 2 x 6 construction with attic trusses for open span and room upstairs, 15' walls to allow a 4 poster lift, (have a 2 post asymmetric lift in the other garage for mechanical work.) The bay doors are 9 x 10 and will use hugger track and torsion spring/ wall mount openers. There will be 3' between walls and doors, not a lot but enough room to open the doors of the cars. The remaining 15' will be a wood workshop, with a wall separating the areas. Plan on Mitsubishi heat pumps for heat/ac in each area- car, workshop, and upstairs 12 x 42 room. Will be using 6" 3,500 concrete. I am sure I will be seeking some ideas from the forum!

There are a lot of garage and shop projects on the GJ that were successfully completed by very talented, disciplined people with surprisingly low costs. Good for them I say. But for someone like me, getting way up off the billfold was the only way I could get the shop I wanted in my lifetime. I still did the majority of the work. However, having all of the components delivered on the same truck was a real, no excuses accepted motivator.

Thanks, guys. Ya, know what you mean with staring at the loadeductible truck backing in! :scared: this is a fairly straight forward project. The other garage is 6 bays x 21 deep and used for repairs, welding, and machine storage. This one is for storing vehicles and will be by the house. Will post photos as it goes. Got friends for escavating and framing so time should move along.

Congrats! Photos will be expected.

Just a couple to share...not very exciting. My friend ripping some good New England rock and the footing forms ready to go. Pouring tomorrow 5-13-14, pending weather.

Update. Forms set and poured.no issue with ledge...should of pushed the rear of the garage back a bit deeper than 28 feet deep.... oh well. Finished the drainage pipe, hooking house and garage gutters together into a 6" main that runs out towards the back acreage. Ground is nice and dry.
First "car" trying out the back door; she approves! Pouring floor after Memorial Day, allowing some time to finish wetting and compacting crushed concrete and gravel subfloor.
Electrician visited and planned the separate metered 600 foot, 200 amp underground service as the best route. Sure glad the escavator, carpenter and electricians are good friends....
that it is for updates.

Got the floor poured during the cloudy day Friday. 3,500 mix with fiber in the mix. Minimum 6" deep. Floor power trowelled out nice with a 1" pitch. Pretty happy with the outcome. Got the lumber arriving for a mid-week start, weather permitting. Banks behind the garage pushed back to allow for a small access road and eventual lean-to. Grassed and planted area for erosion control. Taking shape!

Sounds like you had a good day for placing concrete. We did a slab last week under the clouds and it really cured out nice. Now that you are out of the dirt things will really move along. Going to be nice.

Thanks, Bib Overalls.
Checked out your photos. Floor looks great! What did you coat it with?
I remember my uncle, a Seabee during Nam, talking of flooding the concrete after it set to allow it to harden. They pumped from the paddies, I think he said. Slowed the cure. I am happy with the looks of it. Some framing done last night and today. Attic trusses arrived and waiting. Heavy rains planned for a couple of days so movement will slow:tantrum2:

In between rain all has gone well. Zip is up, all is square, and temporary stairway is up. Had a little rain so letting the roof dry out. Decided vinal is final, so picked and ordered the colors. Contemplating heat...looking at the Mitsubishi heat pump w/ ac for the three areas ( car stalls, work shop and upstairs. Was going to run line ft on the coal boiler but just one more trench too many.
Stuck on lights, though. Thinking T5 or LED on the side of the car stalls so not to interfere with the roof of the car on the lift. The door will clear as I am going with the extended height door track with torsion spring and front wall mount opener. Thoughts?

Shingles on ...let it rain. Got the siding delivered. Sandstone trim, cypress vinyl clapboard and a bronzie brown on the Haas doors. Want to search out finishing floor options...I am thinking a good epoxy- suggestions?

Much has happened. 360' trench dug, power and water lines in, waiting on meter to be connected. Building closed and tight. Front approach ramps poured. Decided on HAAS doors 2000 series to get 17+ r value. Liftmaster direct wall mount openers with extended track upto 14.5' to save headroom. Insulation is next. Slow going but at least moving ahead!

Very nice, and I love the "back" door. Really enhances the house and adds curb appeal.

Well done, Koopster

Thanks, kd3pc. Been waiting too long for the power company.....they "screwup" the order to connect to the meter so I am on the waiting pattern. Meanwhile have the insulation, wall covering, etc sitting and waiting...ugh. filled the trenches yesterday. Also ordered the Mitsubishi Hyper Heat units which should work well down to New England winter temps. Although tempted to epoxy the floor while waiting on electric figured it would only get beat up while finishing the interior. Guess I'll just sit and have a beer!

Re: pulled the plug...Garage on its way

Got the blueboard and plaster finished, tied in the electrical and lights. Kept outer bay lights at about 30° to the floor to shine one the sides of the cars instead of straight down to avoid shadows. all lights are separated switches with center 6 tube lights utilizing two switches themselves to control 1/2 the tubes. This gives excellent control of lighting; from accent or utility lighting to daylight levels.
Lots to do yet, workshop not even started, shelving and diamond plate to install on the walls of the main bays, floor to paint...all will wait until Spring. Good place to let the tractor unthaw after tackling this week's New England storm of just over 30" of snow.
Mitsubishi hyper heats working great:spit:

Very nice job. Not sure if you have picked a floor paint yet, but consider Corotech brand. It is owned by Benjamin Moore. Did my garage this past summer and worked well. Good overall reviews.

KOOPSTER!

I've been watching the garage threads for about a month now.... waiting for a garage with similar dimensions to mine. Sure enough you are the lucky winner! My barn addition is also 28X42 and the ceiling is 19' to the peak of catherdrial trusses. How much room do you have to spare in front of the Super Duty?

What size garage doors?

I'm anxious to see what you plan for work benches and storage....

Thanks, guys. The doors are 9 foot wide, 10 foot high, & a full 2 inches thick, are made by Haas doors. this gives plenty of room to get in. If you have the extended mirrors on your truck, you will need to fold them in. Should have went with 10 foot wide, but did not plan on getting a new truck as soon as I did. The Super Duty's have mirrors that are about an inch wider than the door so I need to fold them in. I have my paint for the floor ready to go. Cortech 2 piece epoxy. it will be slate gray with a yellow line painted in the middle of each bay like a road. I have a brand new lift, a forward lift asymmetrical two post, 10,000 pound capacity. I may sell this and pick up a large for post. The 15 foot ceilings will allow fitting the trucks under the lift for parking.
I am tossed up for cabinets and work benches. There will be no welding or greasy work in this garage, I have a different workshop for that. the upstairs rum finished is 12 foot wide 40 foot long an 8 foot high. Its a family battle of what will go up there lol!

Bobforapples, I have about 6 feet behind or in front of the pickup. I planned on going 34 foot deep at first but thought I was going to have a ledge problem. Later escavation prove me wrong but it was too late and besides, I've spent enough already lol
