is there an all-purpose puller or somewhat close to it?

Well you have pitman, bearing, hub, tie rod, steering wheel, windshield wiper etc.. Those are all different pullers

There is no all purpose puller. Some pullers are more versatile and some are for very specific applications. All depends on what you are trying to pull off.

the older the stuff is the more simply it was built and need less tools to work on

Isn't it supposed to read like this? It depends on what the hell you're trying to pull off.

Of those HF ones in the link there are all the different sizes by the inch and they have reversible fingers for inside/outside applications and then sometimes you can only get a 2 jaw puller into an area so they make them with only 2 fingers 180' apart. Don't forget bearing splitters and slide hammers. Many parts are now constructed with threaded holes so you can thread bolts into the sides through a cross beam which rests on the end of a shaft the part is on. Tightening the bolts draws the part off. It's probably best to buy them as you need them.

^^^Those are awesome and the most versatile general use pullers IMHO. Are they Proto? Mine are almost exactly the same but each arm has two slots so you can move those rather than winding the screw in or out a mile. I have two sizes of sets of those pullers and LOVE them. Pricey though.

3 jaws are considered by some to be the "standard" puller, but are often a PITA to install unaided, unless you get spring loaded ones (eg Snappy) or a really pricey posi-lock unit.

A good size "t-bar" puller is a cheap and handy pulling tool (OTC is fine). Also, if you already have a slide hammer, see if you can find pullers that can be attached to it.

For general pulling stuff, a good 2 or 3 jaw puller will do most things. I have found craftman pullers are pretty good. I bought a 2 jaw 7 ton when I first started out and have not had a reason to get rid of it. I have broke it a couple of times, no big deal, full warranty. It pulled many things in its time, very happy for a craftsman tool. The other puller I would suggest is a bolt style or steering wheel style puller set. Anything that has hole that you put bolts threw, these work pretty good. OTC makes a nice set that wasn't real pricey, real US made OTC, not stinger ****. Other than that, the skies the limit, bearing seprators, push pull and any numer of special purpose pullers that unless that what you're tackling, will collect dust.

I find myself using 2 jaw and harmonic balancer Y pullers the most as they seem the most versatile. But my application is usually small tractor pto pullies.

I find the Y puller to be very useful if you have some real estate around that you can thread into.
