I need some help on designing a pulley system for my bbq. its a charcoal bbq that i want to have the actual grill on a pulley system so that it can be put at various heights. im thinking of drill two holes on both sides at the top where a rod would go through and on the outside have a crank of some sort. im having a hard time picturing it though. any ideas??

Thats called a Santa Maria grill. Very coool, excellent function. they used to be common projects in metal or shop classes. Do a Google search (web or image ) for Santa Maria Style BBQ and you should be able to get some ideas

i have another problem now. what kind of system can i do to secure it while i reel it up. meaning with the weight of the food on the grill whats to say that it wont unwind itself back down. im thinking somehow something with like a cotter pin or something. i was thinking a ratchet design but i need it to be as simple as possible for my father.
