Punch stamp chrome sockets?

I have most socket sets I need with the exception of 1/2 metric and 3/8 metric deep sets. All my stuff is Craftsman so I stopped by Sears over the weekend to look at tools. I read on the forum that the laser etching wears off over time.

Since all of my sockets are the old style, could I punch them to mark the sizes?

I don't have a punch set but it would be worth it to buy a set if they will work on chrome sockets. I suspect they will cause the chrome to peel but thought I would ask.

Probably not. I doubt you could get a punch set that would be able to make a legible marking. Even if you did, I think the concern most have on the laser etched only is the warranty because of the lack of part number after the etching has been erased.
The newest Craftsman sockets are both stamped in the traditional markings and laser etched. I never got why they went to laser etching in the first place. If it aint broke, dont fix it. :headscrat Maybe just a gimmick to up the price 30% on sockets. So be patient and let the new sockets get worked into the local sears and then purchase.

My thought was to buy the old style sockets off Fleabay or Craiglist rather than spending more for the new laser etch sockets. I do like the larger numbers since my eyesight is not what it was 30 years ago.

If it will not cause the chrome to peel, I would stamp all my sockets in 3/16 or 1/4 type.

After I posted and on the way to work, I thought that the sockets might be hardened steel and if so, they were probably punched before heat treatment.
