Punches/Chisels

So I am seriously lacking in the punches/chisel department.

Is the large Craftsman punch/chisel set still the best deal out there for around $80 or is there something else I am missing?

I would still need a few other punches to compliment that set, namely larger chisels and race/bearing punches, etc, but the only thing I currently have is the long roll pin punches from Craftsman.

I would like to score on a good selection of used ones, but it is hard to find people selling just punches.

I have the Craftsman set. I think it's a great value for all you et. I have no complaints with any of the punches or chisels in the set...

I agree. I've used lots of punches and Mayhews hold up the best. However there's some value in being able to swap Craftsmans when they get damaged.

I am shameful to admit that I have the HF ones but they seem to work fine for what i use them for. I am just a hobby wrencher, but seem to use the quite a bit.

I also have the harbor freight ones but they are a FAIL in my opinion. I don't bash HF too much but these snap off like slim jims...OH YEAH!

I have a lot of punches and chisels including quite a few Mayhews and I do like them. I prefer my Rennsteig punches and chisels and my PB Swiss punches though.

Are you talking standard mayhews or the 150 line, the 150 line is not even comparable to the standards.

You must have gotten a bad batch, or i got a good one. I haven't had a problem with mine.

Yea I have the dasco set. They are made in the USA and are a good value. Available at lowes and I think home depot.

Does anyone know if the Dasco chisel and punches are covered under a lifetime warranty and if so, can they be warrantied at the store you purchased them, or do you have to mail them to Dasco?

I am still thinking Craftsman might be the best route only for ease of replacement and since I'm not a professional using punches and chisels day in and day out. I like higher end tools but I can't justify spending tons of coin on punches and chisels.

I still would love to find some garage sale or flea market special though.....that would be my ultimate goal.

Those Mayhew and Rennsteig punches and chisels look sweet.....

I was wondering about the Dasco brand because I've noticed them at Lowes and the Home Depot. They are made in the USA and visually look to be similar quality to the Craftsman brand. They are also a very good price.

I bought the 38 pc Craftsman set about a year ago. It supposedly has every punch and chisel that Craftsman makes. I haven't used them extensively, but I don't have any complaints so far, and some of the bigger sizes have been whailed on.

I have a C-man set that has worked well for me. I also have some from Baltimore Tool Works and several from Enderes. Both brands have held up well.

i have large dasco's that i use on farm equipment and they hold up great. i have never had one to try and return so i dont know on that

That's like asking if drill bits come with a warranty.

I lucked out and found a fairly complete set of Proto chisels at a pawn shop. I think I got all of them for around $2-$3. They've been good chisels, but fotunately I haven't had to waranty any of them. I'd say go with C-Man for ease of replacement... :thumb

I have the HF set and they are ok at best and will be replaced soon. The cold chisel have to be sharpened every time I use them. However the drifts and punches work fine. Also the brass punch set its great too.
