Punctured garden hose repair?

Anyone happen to know if those tapes work for fixing a hole in your water hose? Or does it just form a bubble as soon as there's pressure on the line? Dog bit a hole in the hose and I'd rather not replace the whole hose if it's not necessary. Here's an example of the tape:

I need the repair to be small so that the hose will still be able to reel up. If I use band clamps it will hang on the opening of the hose reel. Thanks!

I agree with the above, or, depending on where the cut is, put a threaded hose connector on each end so now you have 2 hoses, or if you don;t need the extra length, put a hose end on the long part .

If it isn't a particularly great hose, I'd cut it, put an end on it, if that makes a useable hose length, or replace. Since you can do both ends as mentioned in post #4, you might benefit. I certainly prefer two 25' extension cords to a 50'. In hoses that would be two 50's instead of 100.

For the cost of one repair barb at lowes or HD you can get a set of the good male and female ends with the 2 piece clamp from Amazon and make 2 shorter hoses.
I stopped by lowes the other day for a few things and needed a new male end for a hose. All they had was the style that uses a hose clamp for about $5. I ordered a 2 male and 2 female with the good clamps for about $6.
The nice thing is you can pull them off when the hose goes bad and use them on the next hose when needed.

ETA: Well I didn't read the part about fitting thru the hose reel so I guess my idea won't work for you.

I'm thinking a plastic hose barb, wrapped tightly with some malleable wire ( as a clamp), than finished off with some electrical heat shrink. Low profile-should still wind through your hose reel.

I would cut out the damage and splice it back together.
Neither really works. Lot of years trying various tapes, sealers and mechanical splices, nothing has been watertight in my experience. I eventually just buy a new hose. If the damage was near the end, I'm liely to keep it as an extension piece, say when draining a water heater or running a submersible pump on a pool cover or sump.

I used a similar tape to temporarily repair a coolant vent hose on my car. It held just fine for two weeks until I could get the replacement part Clean off the hose as best you can with soap and water and rubbing alcohol. Then follow the directions on the tape. I found other uses for the tape once I had it.

Any tape just bubbles/leaks eventually (rather quickly). I have a good hose I hit with my lawn mower and have been considering options, but after reading (and trying the tape) i'll cut and splice on a connector.

Cut and splice. But the insert can be a PITA if you want to reel it up. I also dont like worm clamps and would use Oetiker 2 ear clamps.

One of my favorite tools that I rarely get to use is a hydraulic crimper. Just cut out the hole and splice with a crimp sleeve and you'll never look back. Any other type of splice will be bulky or have sharp edges.

Cut and splice in a barb x barb. Use a Clamptite tool to make low-profile wire clamps that won't snag.

Never seen that kind of thing before. Don't know how to use it lol. Looks like it could work out though.

I don't know much about hydraulics.. could you post an example of what it would look like when finished? Would this snag on a hose reel? My water hose reel has the typical circular guide that the hose has to slide through. That's why band clamps won't work.

I've got several good, old, craftsman black rubber hoses that I've repaired. The repair barbs are just a few dollars and you can find them at Lowes, Home Depot, Ace. A hose repair takes 15 minutes max. For me it is worth it.
You know those black Craftsman hoses had a life time warranty? I've replaced mine at least 4 times before they went under...Same with their garden tools, rakes, shovels, etc...Ahh the good old days.

I've had good luck using the self-adhering silicone tape - but only on "soaker" hoses. If they are woven around plants in the yard, it can be a PITA to replace with a new soaker hose until the growing season is done.Never had a problem with leaks, but it's not as if the hoses are pressurized to the same extent as a standard hose. But if it did weep a little, well, it's a soaker hose.

I've used the metal hose splices many times and they work well, but only worth it if your hose still has some life left in it.

I've used that self fusing tape on a drain line under my laundry sink and it worked well, but don't have personal experience with using it on a hose with pressure inside. It should work if applied correctly, it does really fuse to itself and the hose. You should be able to get it at your local hardware store, no need to order it online.

Skip the tape if you want a repair that will last. Either put in a splice kit, or cut it at the puncture and put on male and female ends to make two shorter hoses that you can link together.

I've done both with success every time. I've even repaired a few bad hoses that I was only using for low-pressure irrigation by using a short piece of 1/2" copper pipe as the splice. I always have tons of hose clamps already on hand.

Those clamps are 58% more efficient at cutting your hands than they are keeping a hose together! I haven't found the perfect hose splice repair solution yet, but I'm still searching.
Get a set of these from Ace Hardware. You'll have two shorter hoses you can link together for one longer hose and no hose clamps to cut your hands.

i think god is a practical joker when it comes to garden hose and extention cords, you just cant drag them anywhere without hanging up on every twig

you got a hole, just buy a new one
