Thanks a lot

I just got a Cub Cadet CC98M rear drive $399 bucks. A big step up from the Craftsman I had before, Have heard, but cannot confirm, that it is same as John Deere minus the green paint job

HONDA -

Not the kind with just the Honda engine, but the whole shabang - meaning body and engine by Honda.

My father has a Honda which must be at least 15 years old and still runs and cuts great.
I thought about Honda's but they didn't have a caster wheel model. The caster wheels make a HUGE difference if you have a lot of trimming/turning to do.

Since you can't buy a new two stroke Lawnboy I would have to say a Honda (as stated earlier a real Honda mower) with an OHV engine and an aluminum deck.

No question about it, Honda. I was given the neighbors "worn out" self propelled lord knows how old Honda a couple weeks back and I could not believe how much better this thing "worn out" performed than any other push mower I have ever owned! One of the places the Honda really shows how much better it does is when you use it to vacuum up excess trimmings and stuff after you have clipped the hedges and sting trimmed.

I kid you not, I would have been the first to poo poo spending the money on a Honda before this, but from now on, nuthin but Honda for me!

BTW: The reason mine was proclaimed worn out and replaced is that it puffs a little blue smoke during the start up, then it goes away after about 5 seconds. Certainly nothing justifying replacing the rings at this point. I have heard that Honda lawnmower engines are a Beach to work on though. (I do not know if that is true, it is simply what I heard)

What happened to two stroke Lawnboys? They were about the easiest and best mowers ever. :headscrat

Ditto on the older 2stroke Lawnboys, absolutely bulletproof engine and a great self propel drive and deck. You can still find them in relatively good shape and usually priced well as many ppl are sick of mixing fuel now. I have a 5hp self propel 3spd from 1996 and I paid the sum of 50$ for almost new conditon. Best fuel ratio is 40:1 with Mobil 2T oil in mine. Little smoke and gobbs of power. Get one and you'll be hooked on them.

They couldn't meet the latest emission regulations. Here in Ca.,it's been many years since we have been able to sell 2-stroke mowers. We sold a zillion Toros that had the 2-stroke Suzuki engine. For the last several years you could still get those in the other 49 states, but I think that's even gone now.Probably the same story with Lawnboy.
We sell Toros,Snappers and Hondas, and The guys here are right,in that the Honda wholegoods mower is a great choice.Try to get the best model you can afford, since the entry level ones are pretty fragile.

God it will be a sorry day when everyone else in this country follows California's lead, yes indeed, sad and sorry for sure. Honestly I have no idea how you folks on the east and west coasts make it in either one, each seems as bad as the other too me!

Truly a land where the regulatory crazies are totally unleashed along each seaboard!

You said push mower, so I assume you don't want a self-propelled mower. Self propelled mowers are for elderly and handicapped people. I can cut faster without it.
I also have no use for a 2 cycle mower, as I am sensitive to noise.

Toro Super Recycler is the best push mulching mower, Snapper makes the best bagging push mower. I researched the hell out of mowers before I decided on the Toro. I love my Toro Super Recycler. The Cub Cadet was a close second, but that generic chinese engine just didn't do it for me.

I'm telling you the crazies out here think they will resurrect this bankrupt wreck of a state with green-collar jobs, multicultural love-fests, hemp-granola bake sales, and harnessing the wind power of flatus. Everybody's so busy taking tax income from the next guy nobody has time to work. California is more of a disease than a state; everything is a 'known carcinogen' out here, even sawdust. It's too late for us, but you fellers what live in the remaining sane states need to stop the advance of this silliness. Start the second American revolution n I'll come join yer side.

The best would be whichever one your wife can operate. Never have more lawn than your wife can mow.

I've got two Craftsman self propelled mowers. The old one is about twenty years old, I bought it in '01 for $75, the front tires are bald as hell, and it starts up every time. The newer one is about 12 years old, in nice shape, but needs to be 'pre-started' It won't start up right away so I have to pull it, give it a few minutes, then it gets going. Both work okay. I'd probably be afraid to buy a new Craftsman mower now, though, with all the Sears horror stories I've read on this board.

I've heard very good things about Honda and Snapper mowers. Just never have owned any.

Ha ha! I missed this before. Guess I'm handicapped, elderly, or both! :lol_hitti

Once you start using a self propelled, you'll never go back to a push mower. My neighbors think I'm crazy to mow my yard without using a riding mower, even though I can do the whole thing and bag the clippings in a little over an hour.

Just bought a Toro Super Recycler, and I like it. $530 for the self propelled personal pace w/bag. They have a SUper Bagger with a Honda engine if you only bag.

Honda does not sell a $500 aluminum deck as far as I could find. Home Depot sells a plastic deck cheap, but it seems stripped down. Honda's $500 mower is stamped steel and seemed like ****.
I replaced a 20 YO Honda HR214 that I loved, but it didn't mulch for ****.

There is only one lawnmower that commands respect when you oull it out if the garage and that's the Toro. I've been mowing my lawn for 30 years and I just got a new Toro recycler a few years ago. Starts first pull. I run it out of gas each fall and fill it in the spring and again it starts first pull. Don't get the Home Depot Toro, go to a Toro dealer and get the cast aluminum deck model. I have the Personal Pace model now and it's great. By the way, my old Toro is at my Dads farm where we use it to trim where the garden tractor won't reach. Also, I believe they would be what's called an American company.

Bolster, well said and if it weren't true it would be funny. Unfortunately, Maryland follows Calif.'s lead. I have one more son to get through college and I'm outta here. He starts in the fall.

When I went shopping for lawnmowers with my father in law 2 years ago, he had a John Deere dealer tell him not to buy a current series John Deere walk behind / self propelled mower. They are a Snapper painted green. He was doing a lot of warranty work on them - I think it was mainly the drive system. He recommended Toro (which he sold) or Honda.

My father in law ended up with a Toro Personal Pace. It's been a great mower that mulches and bags well.

Guess I'll be the weirdo. I have a Craftsman and like it:shocking:

I bought it on closeout 7 years ago, marked down from $225 to $155. It has a B&S 6.0 Hp engine with 14 inch tires on the back. It's not self propelled or a bagger as I don't want either of those. Heavy steel deck with no rust. It gets new oil, air filter and spark plug once a year and brushed off and "degrassed" after each use and still starts on the first pull.

I have one, same exact story except mine is 6 & 3/4 hp and a mulching rear bagger. I have been quite satisfied till I got my hands on that ol worn out Honda I spoke of earlier.

When I was a kid, we bought a new mower for my grandmother around the time I was 13? Her 11 year old mower was rusted out. I believe that was around 1983. It was replaced sometime around 94 or 95? It was getting rusted out pretty good (fixable), but my b-i-l had been off work due to medical issues (took them a long time to figure it out). I was taking care of his yard and chores for a year. He bought at a charity auction (shouldn't have, he just started back to work), a "gone over" two cycle Lawn boy. I gave it up this year (91 model still worked good) due to having too many gas oil mixtures and I was given a gas Cub Cadet with a Briggs. Never had a motor problem with the Briggs (I maintain them), but I did have issues with both a Techumsa? (free curb mower) and the Lawn boy, once, due to bad gas. Replaced the gas and rebuilt/cleaned the carbs and they were good to go.

The motors on most mowers, long outlive the decks/handles, around here.

I agree with you on the part that most engines will outlast the deck. My last push lawnmower was a 1971 model Briggs 3 1/2 hp worked great for almost 38 years. It's been thru 3 decks, 2 points and condensers kits, at least 10 spark plugs and god knows how many gallons of oil and possibly a gas stations daily sales in gas. It was a great lawnmower for the time it was in use but the age caught up with it, needed new piston rings, another deck (the current one was welded in a few places) needed a carb kit and the blade has kissed a few rocks in its day. If I had to buy another lawnmower sadly it wouldnt be a briggs, too many plastic parts on them, I'm not a fan of the plastic carbs and well they arent built like they used to be. If I had a choice it would have to be a Honda, very hard to beat and they start in 1 or 2 pulls.

Honda. Walk, no RUN the hell away from Breaks & Scatters engines. They have become the most god awful piles of dog dookie ever produced.

I can think of at least 7 that have failed prematurely on me in the last 5 years or so.

really? We had one at school that had problems, took it out, had a hole in the cylinder, the idiots decided to drain the oil, and dump sand in it, and hold it wide open for 15 minutes...wouldn't blow up :wtf::beer:

I've owned a low-end Cub Cadet for 3 years. It's fine. Starts on the second pull every time. Works well and was cheap. Best buy rated by Consumer Reports. I'd say don't spend a fortune on a mower if you have less than a 1/4 acre to mow, especially if you have a level yard.

Where are you located at Remingtonbox? We bought two Honda Commercial HR216 for our church 3 years ago, they had two seasons of 38 weeks of mowing for one to one and a half hours per week, then last year we had a church member that has a mowing service put in a super low bid, so due to having a problem getting volunteers to mow, we went with the bid. We've already sold one for $600 ($1000 new) and are trying to sell the other for the same price if we can get it.

Major Ram hasn't ever used one of these mowers, we had to take it back to the store to get the speed turned down on it as you dang near had to run behind it to keep up, reminds me of a reel type McLain I used to have.

2" pump engine, died in under a year
replacement, died in under two years

6.5hp on my husqvarna, sent back for warranty work 4 times, finally replaced engine after I locked it up. New engine smokes like a chimney

36cc on my weedeater...case seal busted, leaked oil out, locked up. replacement engine is ok so far...

8hp on my generator, case seal split, low oil shut down caught it, engine replaced.

19.5 hp briggs in my mower, leaks from every seal...

Poulan rototiller, straight out of the box it surged and backfired and stalled. Returned it and swore off ever buying another briggs engine

3 honda engines on grain augers, left outside for 10 years straight, including north dakota winters, start up every time

honda engine on my cub cadet rototiller, fired up the first pull from new, purrs like a kitten

honda engine on dads mower, pulls on first start every time, no trouble

I'll be damned if I'll buy another Breaks & Scatters.

Why you wanna spend that much? Go down to Menard's and grab a $150 MTD with a Briggs & Stratton. Rear discharge, so it's easy to trim with or you can mulch with the thing. A good ol' side discharge is even less.

Made in the USA (Tennessee deck, Wisconsin engine) by an American company.

I've had mine since new in 1993, starts on first pull. Rewound the pull cord a couple of times and am on my third or fourth blade.

Save yer money kid.

Buncha stinkin Jap lovin communists is what we got around here.....

....now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna run up to Citgo in my VW and grab a jug of gas for the thing.
