Putting Roof on Pole Shed type structure

Previous owners put up this chicken coop/run with 4x4's embedded into the ground. Unfortunately the 4x4's are only 6' above ground, so with the 1x6 boards there is only 5'8" of clearance, but that's a problem for another day.

Is there an budget conscious way to put a roof on this structure? I am hoping to store my lawn tractor and yard trailer under it. Possibly even throw up some siding around it to make it like a pole barn.

You don’t know how deep they’re in the ground? You’d need them deep enough to resist wind uplift and have enough roof pitch/rafter size for your snow load. How big of an area are you thinking of roofing?

I haven’t dug down yet, but I would imagine 24” based on the other posts we’ve pulled out on this property

I’ve considered pulling the posts to create the pitch and then put headers for a single slope, but at that point I may as well tear it all down and redo the whole thing

That is probably the best course of action. There isn’t much there to start with right now. Having the posts set correctly would make the rest of the project worthwhile.

I would dig around each of those posts to see if rot is starting since they are unprotected from water before doing anything.

I'll X3 this. You can find other uses for those posts around the farm. I seem to spend 3x Time and 1X as much money trying to make old **** work as starting fresh.

I’m with them, get a fresh start. But for what you’ll spend on wood I’d suggest ripping all of it out and go with something like this.

It looks a little too big to easily/cheaply toss a roof on. You will have to build or buy actual trusses.

Building rafters would be the easy way to go, with metal roof.

I second the Versatube shelter from Menard's. As long as they're anchored on a flat surface they're very solid.
