Im in the process of putting the windows in my garage addition, they are replacement basement windows, they are 32 inches wide by 19 inches high and they are American Craftsman Windows with Dual Tilt-N-Turn locking handles and open to the inside by tilting inward. Since this is a new building and im not actually replaceing a window can anyone tell me the proper way to install these windows. I am putting them up nice and high just to let light in,they are high enough that no one can look in. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Mike

Nailing flange? I presume not since those are fairly easy to figure out.

Shim bottom corners and mullion (if any) and nail. You might want to try and find someone who has done this before to help or track down the install instructions from the manufacturer. It's pretty easy to botch a window if you don't level and square it properly.

Mine has a nailing flange on them and the last ones I put in had instructions for different applications. Here they are suppose to withstand I believe 90MPH winds so you need to use a gasket like paper between the wood and the flange. On the house and the garage I didn't do it since it will have a trim piece over it that is caulked so it should prevent any wind or water leakage. Since I hardly use nails anymore I just used sheet metal screws and the trim over it I route a slot that will fit over the heads. Probably not the right way, but it is the way I did it.

For new construction, most use windows used for new construction which has the nailing flange around it. Replacement windows are normally used by replacing the sash in you existing windows, putting them into place in the existing window frame, using supplied trim pieces, caulking, etc.. You may have to get some different windows unless you make up a frame to fit what you have and then trim it out somehow to waterproof it.
