Ran across this pic and article regarding fire rated walls and the use of putty pads --has anyone come across these and if so - when are they needed?

Can't really tell anything from that picture, but I'm assuming that you're referring to sealing penetrations in a fire wall?

Sorry ....poor pic..I'll get another. The pic came from my UL connection periodical and it caught my attention since I'm also using the blue plastic electrical boxes. The wall where I have a bunch of these boxes is a 1 hour wall..but I'm not closing (wall board) for some time..... if ever. Is this putty stuff something new?

its not a 1hr wall with one side uncovered (unless you happened to put 2 layers of 5/8 drywall on the other side)

is this a wall between a garage and your house?

Good catch - there is a breezeway between the garage and the house - and the dwgs show a layer of 5/8 drywall between the OSB and the planned T/G Cedar siding. However, Tyvex is now covering the OSB and when I side with the Cedar - I can lay down the 5/8 beforehand. So, two layers of 5/8 is planned--eventually - when I close up the inner wall.

But - to answer your original question, there is not specifically a wall between the house and the attached garage - but a framed-in breezeway. In any case - I would like to maintain the enhanced fire rating - and this is the first I have heard anything about membrane penetrations et al and the need for putty pads or other means - however, it does make sense to me.

The pics below may help define my layout.

First of all, the blue plastic nail-on boxes have a 2 hour rating. This rating is given provided that it is the only box between the two studs surrounding it. When blue boxes are installed in common walls between two rooms, and a 2 hour rating is required, putty pads must be installed if the boxes do not maintain a 24" separation, measured horizontally along floor-line.

Normally in residential construction, rated walls only need 1 hour protection.
