Yes, I know better know, but didn’t at the time. Anyway, mine failed recently which is good as I have been meaning to replace it for the last year. No big explosion sending shrapnel everywhere thankfully. This was installed about nine years ago and was in the attic of my shop.

I have been told that Confessions are good for the soul.

That being said what do you plan to install as your new air system?
IMHO, iron pipe is economic and secure. There are many choices to choose from and they all have thier pluses and minuses.

Please keep us posted.

I use half inch PVC pipe for airline from my diaphragm air blower to provide bubbles for my koi pond. The bubbler output is under 3 feet of water so I figure I’m running about 1.5 psi. Ten feet of plastic pipe is buried about a foot deep before transitioning to flex to get into the pond. I figure this is safe. :rocker:

All of the garages/shops I've been in (and noticed) have PVC for the air lines, and until I found this site, I would have used it in mine as well. Not now though. Still not sure what I'll use, but it wont be PVC.

My first shop I went iron pipe, because PVC hadn't been invented yet, and copper was much more expensive. I was tempted by PVC in the current shop, but I was afraid of it getting burned by flying slag, so I went with copper, which is about as easy as PVC, and about the same cost as iron.

I bought a roll of PEX at least 9 months ago to replace the PVC. There aren’t many folks using it, but they are out there. Of the approx 85 feet, only 6 will be exposed to sunlight and it will only be indirect.

The PEX manufacturers will tell you not to use the 'regular' (waterline) PEX for this, it's only rated for water and any contaminants (like blow-by oil) could affect its integrity. Do I personally think it's an issue, no.

Kay, I know you aren't that-old! Without cribbing from google, I believe PVC was first used in the 1950's. I have an old issue of Popular Science which had a story about Genova brand PVC.

Since we're taking about PVC, who knows when the ratcheting PVC cutter was invented and by whom? If you have to google, 'you're cheatin'!' The only reason I know this is I bought one of the first of this type of tool, and the company advertised themselves as being the originators of this tool, and bringing it to market. It was over 40 years ago. If someone has contradictory evidence, I'll stand corrected.

I use galvanized steel pipe off my Saylor-Beall air compressor, to a manifold which has 1 side 1/4" and the other side 3/8", then to a 50 ft length of 3/8" air hose to reach to the water separator and pressure regulator, with an air tap ball-valve and air drop between the water separator and the air hose reel. I've been meaning to do a hard-pipe feed to the pressure regulator & water separator, but I haven't gotten to it. I can proudly say, "no PVC!"

p.s.: MrSurly is a show-off! 'Shore looks purty!'

Its not chili unless it has beans in it.

I had PVC airlines at one time but they are gone now. I put them in at a time when everyone else was doing it and didn't think twice about it. Live and learn, nobody got hurt.

I think PVC pipe has been around since before WWII. BASF? I'm sure it was a German thing. But, we didn't see it in the hinterlands until maybe 1972-3, when our building codes adopted it. By then I had strung my first iron air lines.

Last week, my wife frantically called me to the house as a 1/2" cpvc pipe had broken and was spraying water everywhere. It was about 4" long and broke in two places. Don't know why. It led to an outside faucet and has been there since the house was built in '79. I replaced it with a braided line from a faucet that I had in the drawer, just in case it was under stress. Only things ruined were some cardboard boxes that we use for shipping.

PVC/CPVC gets old and brittle. A couple years ago I had to replace a water heater and busted a line in the process. They were old (original with the house in 1973) and brittle, so I replaced all of the water lines. Figure they will last another 40 years and will be my kids problem by then.

You are only allowed to set your compressor to a maximum pressure of 12 PSI... for the duration of two calendar months. That is the required punishment.

That's just messed up. Made me fall into a cold sweat...

Love me some rapidair. When building the big shop I looked at all the options and ended up getting two rapidair kits. They don't leak, easy to install, etc.

My brother in law has a garage PVC piping system that has to be AT LEAST 30 years old. You can't tell him anything so I don't. If I did tell him you know what I'd get, right? "I've been using it 30 years without a problem"

I'll just leave it alone and hope he isn't in there when it inevitably blows.:scared:

So I’m planning out my future garage build. I’m thinking about using 3/4 air brake hose with brass quick connects. Anyone else ever use it
